Maxine's Story
Barbara
Oh yes, my tiny one, you do recognize it---and why shouldn't you---it is all that you have known---this love! The love that I felt for you long before you were handed to me in that hospital. "You have a daughter" the nurse said. (I had not dared to hope for a daughter).
It has been two weeks now and your eyes so clear and focused, lock on mine and you know! And your precious baby smile seems to say that you love us too, your adoring family.

We're getting better acquainted! By now you will recognize those big work roughened hands, even in the dark, when they pick you up and hold you so tenderly---not with any awkwardness---your Dad knows what he is doing! He also knows all the bounces and jiggles and fancy footwork that seem to alleviate this colic! COLIC. We haven't had much experience with this dreaded condition---but then neither has the doctor apparently. He wasn't 'our' doctor, but a substitute and for that reason I can forgive him his ignorance! "You have to hold her close to your body and make her feel secure and loved" he said. HUH? Even your Grandma was appalled---and she told him "There is no baby on the face of the earth that is more loved or wanted than this one!" Well---so much for the medical profession!
We'll figure out what eases that pain---mostly these awful attacks happen in the night, so you are going to get to know your Dad a whole lot better---and please do be patient with his music! I suspect that Lily Marlene sung off key and in German, isn't going to be one of your favorite pieces---but he has another one! When he sings "You are my sunshine", he means it! You are! And he has and he will, work so very hard to provide for you---whatever your needs are.

Your brother is learning so quickly---he is only four and a half, but he wants to hold you and to change your diapers---to help care for you. You'll need to be patient with him too. He loves you so very much already.
Yes, my sweet little daughter, we are your family. We aren't perfect---not even close---but we have a lot to teach you---about love? No---from this light I can see in your beautiful blue eyes, you know about love already.
