About Me

mauricenorthmore.com-author-poet

I have lived half my life in Australia and the other half in England, where I currently reside.

My passion is writing novels, short stories, and poetry. My interests are photography, music, travel, and keeping fit. I enjoy bike riding, walking, swimming, going to the gym, and the odd cuppa with family and friends.

In my younger years, I was an excellent middle-distance runner. I've played football, raced motorbikes, and played competitive squash.

WRITING:

As an author, these are my favourite sayings.

(a) A writer must live life to be able to write about it.

(b) When the Poet passes by, the writer must step aside and admire the work of the true genius.

(c) One lifetime is not enough. For me this is especially true when it comes to writing.

(d) And finally: Don't let the truth stand in the way of a good story.

It is fair to say in my early years, I applied myself better to other things, rather than writing. But as a Project Manager and Consulting Engineer my technical writing skills improved. Then one night, I read the most awful book I had ever tried to read. I kept reading until I reached page ninety-six. But still, nothing of any consequence had happened. So I chucked the book into the rubbish bin and declared: "I could do better myself."

If not for trying to read that awful book, I may never have found the inspiration and passion to write stories.

SHORT STORIES:

I have written many short stories and published some of these in my book titled "Twilight." My short stories cover a wide variety of genres and two of these stories have won awards overseas.

NOVELS:

My first novel was "The Urban Soldier." This sold well and received countless rave reviews. Its success and the plaudits I received gave me the confidence to write my second novel. This was a political thriller titled "The Prime Minister's Rival." This novel was also well received with readers rating it 5 stars. For my third novel, I decided to try something different and write a crime thriller. I called it "When Darkness Falls." Some readers have commented that this novel is as good as any crime thriller they have read. I have written two more novels titled "One Lifetime is Not Enough" and "Lost in Transit," and both are worth a read.

POETRY:

On a warm January Summer morning in 2004 whilst I was living in Australia a magic thing happened. I woke up with the ability to write poetry and I had no idea why that was. My stories took a back seat for a while whilst I began writing rhyming poems. A friend encouraged me to enter my first poem in a competition. I chose "The International Society of Poets." To my surprise, it won the "Editor's Choice Award." Three more of my poems have also won this coveted award. These 4 poems and many more feature in my book of poetry titled "Atmospheric."

NOVELLAS:

Other books I have written include a novella titled "Penelope's Wedding" and "A Job in Bangkok." These two novellas and two more titled "Her Fathers Wish and "The Spring of Seventy-four" appear in my latest book title "4 For The Price of 1."

RESOURCE BOOKS:

Learning how to write a story and make the story appealing to readers, has been a quest of mine from the beginning. I have undertaken "Creative Writing Courses," joined "Writing Clubs" and entered writing competitions. I still concentrate on improving my writing knowledge, and skills. Throughout this time, I have accumulated a multitude of ideas and information. This and a love of helping others led me to write 2 books on the subject.

For the more adventurous, or experienced writers I recommend "Fast Track Your Novel." This book aims to save you years learning the craft of how to "Write a Story." The book is full of easy-to-follow practical help and ideas galore.

If you are a Beginner, I recommend "A Beginner's Guide To Writing A Story." This book concentrates on the basics in an easy-to-follow format and is currently my best seller.
