Chances are if you have found this page, you're trying to use the MURR Archaeometry Laboratory's statistical routines for the analysis of compositional data ("MURRAp"). These routines are hard-coded into a script that runs in the run-time environment of a program called Gauss (distributed by ApTech). For the sake of argument, the run-time environment is PC only. Here are instructions on how to get the MURR laboratory's statistical routines running on your Mac using Wine, a program that runs Windows applications on Unix-based operating systems.
Step 1. Download WineBottler
This is a bit of software that does 99% of the hard-lifting required by Wine to get a PC app running on your Mac. NOTE: When you click 'Download' you get redirected to a page at adf.ly (to generate revenue for WineBottler's developer). You have to wait 5 seconds, then click the "SKIP AD" button in the top right corner (Figure 1). It's a pain. But if you're really annoyed by it, consider donating some money so the dude doesn't have to do this.
Step 2. Download MURRAp and the Gauss runtime
While WineBottler is downloading, go to: http://archaeometry.missouri.edu/datasets/GAUSS_Download.html and download the MURR statistical routines and Gauss runtime package. Once it is downloaded, go ahead and open up the *.ZIP archive. It should create a folder named "MURRAPv8.*".
Step 3. Install WineBottler
You should have a *.DMG file that you downloaded. Open that, and follow the installation instructions. Seriously, if you don't know how to install applications on your computer, you should be using an Etch-A-Sketch with corks glued to the corners so you can't poke your eyes out.
Step 4. Open WineBottler from your Applications folder
As of me writing this, WineBottler is at version 1.7 something, and the screen looks like this:
Click on "Advanced" on the top bar.
Step 5. Set options
Under "Prefix Template", make sure that the option is set to "new prefix (default)".
Under "Program to install", click "select File" and navigate to wherever you downloaded and un-zipped the MURR statistical routines and Gauss runtime package from Step 2.
In that folder you should see another folder entitled "GRTM_8.0_Win_32".
Open that folder, select "setup.exe", and click "Open"
Back in the WineBottler screen, make sure that the radio button for "This is an installer, execute it." is selected.
Step 6. Click "Install"
Once you click "Install", you are prompted for a location to save the Mac OS icon that will launch the Gauss runtime software. Save it wherever you want. I recommend the Applications folder. You also must provide a name for the icon. I recommend "Gauss Runtime".
Step 7. Wait a few minutes. Click some buttons.
Installing the package will take a few minutes. At some point, you should see a window pop up that will walk you through the installation routine just as if you were installing the software on a PC. Click through it, selecting "next", "yes", etc. as needed.
Step 8. Select "gsrun.exe"
After installation, you are prompted to select a file to run when you double click the icon created in step 6. You want to select "gsrun.exe".
Step 9. You're done...at least for the moment.
You've successfully created a way to run the Gauss runtime environment on your Mac. But that's only part of the installation process. The other half involves getting it to run MURRAp -- the statistical routines.
Step 10. Go to where ever you created the icon in Step 6 above, and double click on it. It will likely take some time to open on the first go-round, but just be patient.
1ApTech does have a Mac OS X version of Gauss, but the MURR laboratory doesn't have a copy or a Mac to run it on. Moreover, the person maintaining MURRAp uses Gauss 8, and the Mac-compatible versions began somewhere around 12. If you ever wanted to know why the open-source movement has taken off, here's a fantastic example.
