A Typical Day
We begin every class with a multiplication facts quiz. I have chosen to give these quizzes daily because I feel that students who know their facts find more success in mathematics. Having solid recall of basic mathematics facts will prove very useful as students progress through higher levels of mathematics - factoring, division, etc. become much easier operations to perform.
It is a proven fact that the pathways to information in the storage center of our brains must be used regularly in order to maintain access to that information; the statement “use it or lose it” holds true in this case. After we make it through “the 12’s” we will be putting division quizzes into the mix. These quizzes may seem unnecessary to some people, and students, but truly are a necessity when doing mathematics.
After the quiz, we move on to the topic of the day. We work in groups in grades 5-7, most of the time, to develop new concepts and we finish the class with a short discussion to clarify the day’s lesson and answer any remaining questions that students may have. Algebra is handled in a more traditional manner, but with a very "Parkerish" textbook that allows the students to apply their new understandings to real-world problems.
I expect every student to take responsibility for their learning. EVERYONE can learn and "do" math, but a positive attitude is required as well as the completion of homework. If a student does not understand, they MUST ask me for help (or a fellow classmate). I am very approachable and am willing to help those who ask. If your child does not want to ask during class, they can ask before or after class, email me, or call me. I expect every student to be PROactive, not reactive.
