Course Overview
Hmong Heritage 1 is a course designed for students with a background in Hmong language and culture. The course provides instruction in the development of basic communicative competence in reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills by building on prior knowledge. Students will gain a better understanding of their Hmong self-identity for a lifelong learning success. A heightened level of cultural, historical knowledge, and language skills that students gain from this course will bridge the gaps between the different generations. Classroom norms will incorporate common Hmong etiquettes to successfully enable the application of knowledge within the community at large.
Course Outline
Semester I
Quarter 1: Self and School Literacy: History of Hmong RPA, vowels, tone markers, & Single Simple Root Consonants
Language & Number: Simple greeting conversations, verbs, nouns, classifiers, short simple sentences, short simple paragraphs, and count 1-20.
History/Culture: Self-identity and Life In Laos
Arts and Music: Hmong Songs
Character: Respect
Quarter 2: Family and Daily Life Literacy: Vowels, tone markers, & Single Root Cons. + Blends
Language & Number: Pronouns, Adjectives, Classifiers, Colors, Short sentences, short paragraphs (simple stories), Simple Conversation in common settings, and count 1-100.
History/Culture: Family Relationship, Routines/Chores, Receiving Guests, Hmong Daily Life
Arts and Music: Hmong Songs
Character: Responsibility: Paub Cai/Hwm Cov Laus & Txais Qhua
Semester II
Quarter 3: Food and Health Literacy: Tone markers, & Double Root Consonants + Blends
Language & Number: Adverbs, Short paragraphs (short stories), conjunctions, simple compound sentences, simple conversations, and count 1-1000.
History/Culture: Traditional vs Modern Food, Traditional Healing (History of Hmong Food) Practice/Medicine vs Modern Healing Practice/Medicine
Arts and Music: Hmong Songs, Simple Hmong Dishes (Simple Recipe), Txwjlom
Character: Caring
Quarter 4: Hobbies & Recreation Literacy: Tone markers & Double&Triple Root Cons. + Blends
Language & Number: Simple conversation In Varies Settings, Simple Prepositions, and count 1-1000.
History/Culture: Traditional Games vs Modern Games
Arts, Music, and Games: Basic Hmong Games: Ua Txwv, Tshuab/Ntiv/Dhia Yas, etc., Hmong Songs/Music
Character: Fairness
Materials Required (Daily)
· Binder with binder papers (college ruled) and dividers
· Composition Book
· Pen and Pencil
· Highlighter
· Index Cards
· Pack of color pencils/crayons
Classroom expectations
Attend class daily and be on time.
Do all work assigned regularly.
Turn assignments in when due.
Pay attention, participate and ask questions.
Take responsibility for your own learning.
Attend all Saturday events or do a project.
Classroom rules
Be in your seat before the tardy bell rings.
Be prepared with materials to class (notebook, pen/pencil, textbook, etc.)
Be respectful to others at all times (Food or drink are not allowed in class (water ok).
Clean up after yourself before you leave.
Spread joy and have fun!
BATHROOM BREAKS
Students may only use restroom during break time, unless it is an emergency which will be determined by the teacher.
DRESS CODE/ZERO TOLERANCE
Students are to follow Duncan Polytechnical High School and Fresno Unified School District Code.
Failure to meet these expectations will result in the following: student and teacher conference, detention, parent contact, and/or referral to the counselor office.
Things to keep in mind: You are not expected to speak, read, and write perfect Hmong by the end of this course! However, you are expected to try to learn to the very best of your abilities. This is a Hmong course and it is important to practice speaking Hmong in order to improve. You must participate fully in all activities in class. You must bring all materials and homework to class as well as being an active member of this class. All assignments including homework and projects are due on the due date. If unexcused, all late work will not be graded and NO POINTS WILL BE GIVEN!
Grading:
The semester grade is based on the weighted grading scale below. If there is any extra credit work given, it will be given to all students in this course. Parents and student must check student’s grade and attendance in Atlas regularly so there won’t be any surprise at the end about their grade or attendance.
Weighted Grade Scale:
1. Assessments 50%
2. Homework 15%
3. Efforts/Participation 35%
4. Extra Credit Based on teacher discretion
Grading Scale: 90-100% A, 80-89% B, 70-79 C, 60-69% D, 0-59% F

It is with great pleasure that I have your child in Hmong this year. I am looking forward to pass down my knowledge to your child as best as I can to give us a chance to preserve our language and culture.
To ensure that your child understands the course requirements and is serious about his/her studies in Hmong, I am asking for your help. It is very important that both you and your child read and understand the expectations of this Hmong class from the syllabus that was sent home along with this letter. Please review and discuss this syllabus with your child. To acknowledge the course expectations, I am requesting that both you and your child sign and date this document and return it to me by the end of this week. If you should have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. Your child’s education is important to me and I am looking forward to enabling his/her ongoing success.
