Sadly, due to the Covid-19 pandemic we stopped all face to face meetings after March 2020. Since then we have been using Zoom. Regarding this, Colin Harris has sent an email to all registered members but please contact Colin Harris for further details in you require them. There appear to be benefits of using Zoom; we can invite speakers from further away and members do not have to venture out on winter nights.
We hope that Pete Williamson's talk in April will resume normal service but that depends on the vaccination programme and the gradual disappearance of the virus; at the moment we are still expecting to deliver this by Zoom.
15.09.20 Dr Keith Moseley 'Venus, the Forgotten Planet?' Venus is our closest neighbouring planet and almost identical in size to the Earth. However, it's opaque atmosphere and hostile surface conditions mean that it has been relatively little studied. Available on Zoom, see above.
13.10.20 Dr Keith Moseley 'How Stars Work' This is a basic course on the function and evolution of stars.
10.11.20 Mr Mark Gibbons (Cotswold Astronomical Society) 'Neutrinos'. An introduction to these mysterious particles that permeate the universe and how to detect them.
08.12.20 The MARS Xmas Meeting. Selected members, armed with a mince pie and a sherry, will each give a ten minute presentation on an astronomically related topic of their choice.
12.01.21 Meeting postponed.
09.02.21 Dr Julian Onions (Nottingham University) 'Galaxies, One Gigayear at a Time'. Types of galaxies, the structure of galaxies and how they form and change with time.
09.03.21 Russell Parry 'The Appley Bridge Meteorite' The story of a meteorite that fell early in WW1, confused people who were braced for war, and what happened after that.
13.04.21 Pete Williamson FRAS. 'Herschel to Hawkwind' Pete, rock guitarist and astronomer, talks about the connection between astronomy and music.
11.05.21 TBD
08.06.21 Members of the society. A practical evening. Details to follow.
