Professor Toleman has published over 180 refereed articles (journals, conference proceedings, book chapters). He has a broad range of research interests including: policy evaluation, university governance, community support tool development, information technology service management (ITSM), information technology governance, design science, agile system development methodologies, the researcher-practitioner nexus, novice developers, philosophy of research, Human-Computer Interaction, usability, component-based software development, e-business, etc. Professor Toleman also remains interested in software tool design, development and evaluation, which was the topic of his PhD completed in 1996.

Recently Graduated Research Students
Dr Rohan Genrich completed his PhD on changing junior student perceptions of IT careers in 2021. Rohan is a Senior Lecturer in Information Systems in the School of Business at UniSQ.
Dr Ransford Mensah completed his PhD on virtualisation of e-government processes in Liberia in 2019. Ransford is now Country Lead in Sierra Leone for the Digital Impact Alliance housed with the United Nations Foundation.
Dr Anup Shrestha completed his PhD on software mediated process assessment in 2015. The research was funded in part by an Australian Research Council Linkage Grant in conjunction with AssessmentPortal and Toowomba Regional Council. Anup's PhD was awarded the Australian Council of Professors and Heads of Information Systems (ACPHIS) medal for the Best IS PhD Dissertation in 2016. Anup is a Senior Lecturer in Information Systems in the School of Business at UniSQ.
Dr Francis Gacenga completed his PhD on a performance measurement framework for IT service management in 2013. The research was funded in part by an Australian Research Council Linkage Grant in conjunction with Queensland Health. Francis is Manager (eResearch) at UniSQ.
Dr Mustafa Ally completed his PhD on usage and preference of traditional and alternative payment methods by online consumers in the Australian marketplace in 2010. Mustafa was an Associate Professor in Information Systems in the School of Business at UniSQ until he retired in 2022.
Dr Dave Roberts completed his PhD on office software upgrade strategies in Australian small business in 2010. Dave was Director of Coursework Studies in the Faculty of Business and Law at UniSQ until 2013 when he retired. He is now an adjunct professor at UniSQ.
Dr Michael de Raadt completed his PhD on teaching problem solving strategies for novice programmers in 2008. Michael was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Computing at UniSQ. He is now Development Manager at Moodle HQ.
Prof Peter Mombourquette completed his DBA on internet use in Atlantic Canada in 2008. Peter is Department Chair at Mount St Vincent University, Canada.
Dr Raul Valverde completed his DBA on re-engineering legacy systems using component-based approaches in 2008. Raul is a faculty member at Walden University.
Dr Aaron Tsai completed his PhD on mobile business: a framework and successful strategies for the transformation process in 2008.
Prof Lynn Sparling completed her DBA on adoption of e-commerce By SMEs in the central Okanagan region of Canada in 2008. Lynn was a faculty member at Okanagan College, Canada.
Mr Michel Jouvernaux completed his MIS on technological choices and decision factors in e-commerce for New Zealand SME in 2007. He is now based in Australia working with Bundaberg Sugar Company.
Mr Chee Ing Tiong completed his MIT(R) on security technology for health care users in 2007.
Prof Aileen Cater-Steel completed her PhD on software process improvement for SMEs in 2005. Aileen's PhD was awarded the Australian Council of Professors and Heads of Information Systems (ACPHIS) medal for the Best IS PhD Dissertation in 2005. Emeritus Professor Aileen was a Professor in the School of Information Systems until her retirement in 2017.
Mrs Barbara Roberts completed her MIT(R) on e-business adoption by Australian wineries in 2004.
Mr Julian Russell completed his MIS on risk analysis decision support systems for handling low structured problems with qualitative data in 2004.
Prof Marguerite (Reet) C. Cronk completed her PhD on understanding IS business value in 2003. Reet is Chair of the Information Systems Department at Harding University.
Dr Penny de Byl (nee Baillie) completed her PhD on emotions in artificial intelligences in 2002. Prof Penny de Byl was at Bond University as Professor of Games and Interactive Multimedia.
