Professor Mark Toleman is Professor of Information Systems in the School of Business at the University of Southern Queensland, where he conducts research, supervises several higher degree research students and teaches in information systems and the MBA.

Professional Roles

Professor Toleman is a member of the international Association for Information Systems as well as a member of the Australasian Association for Information Systems.

He is a member of the Australian Computer Society.

Professor Toleman is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD).

He is a member of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and Working Group 13.1 (Education in HCI & HCI Curricula) and Working Group 8.6 (Transfer & Diffusion of IT).

Professor Toleman is a member of the Executive of the Australian Council of Professors and Heads of Information Systems (ACHPIS).

He was also a trained auditor for the Australian Universities Quality Agency (AUQA) and on the transfer of its operations he was invited to the interim Register of Experts for Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA).

Professor Toleman is an emeritus member of the Association of Australian University Secretaries (AAUS).

Recent Academic & Service Roles

From 2013-2023 Professor Mark Toleman was University Secretary at the University of Southern Queensland and Professor of Information Systems in the School of Business.

As University Secretary, Professor Toleman was secretary to the UniSQ Council, Audit and Risk Committee, Finance and Facilities Committee, Chancellor's Committee and Honorary Awards Committee. He was also an invited member of UniSQ Academic Board.

From 2007-2013 Professor Toleman was Head of the School of Information Systems in the Faculty of Business and Law.

From 2009-2012 he was President (2009-2012) of the Australian Council of Professors and Heads of Information Systems (ACHPIS). As President of ACPHIS Professor Toleman was also a member of the ACS IS Professional Board, AAIS Executive and ACIS Conference Executive which he chaired from 2010. The President also had observer status with the Australian Council of Deans of ICT. From 2012-2014 he was Immediate Past President of ACPHIS.

From 2007-2012 Professor Toleman was a university-elected member and Chair of the UniSQ Academic Board. He was Chair of the UniSQ Academic Board Executive Committee, and a member of the UniSQ Council, the Chancellor's Committee, the Honorary Awards Committee, the Finance and Facilities Committee, the UniSQ Program Management Committee (now Education Management Committee), and the Staff Planning and Policy Committee. He was also a member of the Australian Chairs of Academic Boards and Senates (CABS) forum.

From 2000-2006 Associate Professor Toleman was an elected member and Deputy Chair of the UniSQ Academic Board. He was Chair of the UniSQ Program Review Committee a member of the UniSQ Academic Board Executive Committee, and a member of the UniSQ Planning, Quality and Review Committee. From 2000 until its revamp in 2005 he served as a member of the Vice-Chancellors Committee on Student Support and Equity. He has served on the UniSQ Academic Board since 1995 being elected five times from faculty-based and university-based constituencies.

Associate Professor Toleman was Director of the Electronic Business Advisory and Research Centre, e-BARC (2003-2005).

Dr Toleman was Deputy Associate Dean in the Faculty of Sciences (1998-2001). In this capacity he deputised for the Associate Dean (Academic) whenever required. He was also Computing Coordinator for the Department of Mathematics & Computing (2000-2001) and Research & Postgraduate Coordinator (1998-2000).

From 1997-2002 Dr Toleman was an Associated Academic of the Software Verification Research Centre at the University of Queensland. He maintains contact with colleagues in the Systems and Software Engineering Research Group, in particular on the continuing development and evaluation of a relational document manipulation environment, UQ*.

From 2001-2003 he was a member of UniSQ Information Infrastructure & Services Committee which was disbanded in 2004 and reconfigured in 2005 as the UniSQ ICT Strategy Committee.

Dr Toleman was Chair of the Faculty of Business Appeals Committee (2000-2001). He also served on the Faculty of Sciences Board as one of the Department of Mathematics & Computing repesentatives (1997-2001) and was a member of that Faculty's Academic Programme Committee (1998-2001). Other representative roles include as a Higher Education Forum nominee to the Computer Studies Subject Advisory Committee of the Queensland Board of Senior Secondary School Studies (1995-2001) and on the Branch Committee of the UniSQ Branch of the National Tertiary Education Industry Union (1997-2002).

From 1990-1993 he was Head of Programme (Information Science) in the School of Information Technology at UniSQ. Other academic administration experience includes periods as Acting Dean (1999, 2000), Acting Associate Dean (Academic) (1998, 1999, 2000), Acting Associate Dean (Resources) (1991), and Acting Head, Department of Mathematics & Computing (1999).

In the second half of 1996 he served on the Course Review Committee of Academic Board. From 1994-1996 he was Secretary/Treasurer of the UniSQ Branch of the National Tertiary Education Industry Union, Vice-President of the UniSQ Academic Staff Association (1989-1993) and, in this latter capacity also as a member of the Staff Affairs Committee of the UniSQ Council (1993).
