After leaving university in 1990, I went into teaching languages. Colleagues and management would always tell me that my biggest strength was to be able to tune in easily to people and intuit what was needed both by individuals and groups. I gradually felt more and more called to use this skill more intentionally, which led me to qualifying first in holistic massage, then going on to complete my Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling in 2004. The counselling then took on more and more of a life of its own until in 2022 I felt able to leave my position as an NHS counsellor and psychological therapist, to pursue a full time private practice.
Counselling and embodied therapy have felt like my calling for a long time. Earlier in my life, I struggled with my own mental health, especially with anxiety. Determined to address my problems without medication and to avoid going through the psychiatric system, I succeeded using mainly talking therapy and embodied approaches such as dance and movement, breathwork and holistic therapies. As a result of my own experiences, I have a real empathy with, and drive to help, clients experiencing similar struggles.
Although it was my personal pathway to avoid more conventional treatments, I am happy to work with clients who do not do this - after all, research has shown that a combination of talking therapies and medication can be the most effective treatment pathway. Whatever single approach or combination of approaches someone feels is best for them, I consider it a privilege to be allowed to be a part of , and a catalyst in, someone's healing journey.
