Borrowing Privileges-Resigtration Requirements

The Maple Park Public Library is a tax-supported public library. This means that people residing within the jurisdictional boundaries of the Maple Park Public Library pay taxes to support the library. Those people who live within the jurisdictional boundaries of the Maple Park Public Library need pay no additional fee to be eligible to receive their first library card. Library cards are renewed every three years without additional fees, provided the library card holder continues to reside within the jurisdictional boundaries of the Maple Park Public Library and is a patron in good standing. There is a fee of $5.00 to replace damaged, destroyed, or lost library cards.

As a resident card holder, the borrower identified on the valid borrower’s card may physically take his or her library card to another library to borrow materials. Those materials are the responsibility of the individual who borrows them, and are subject to all of the fines, rules, and regulations of the lending library. Often libraries limit the borrowing privileges of reciprocal borrowers, and it is best to establish local rules and procedures before making your selections.

Individuals residing beyond the jurisdictional boundaries of the Maple Park Public Library and not within the boundaries of another public library, and owning no property within the jurisdictional boundaries of the Maple Park Public Library, may purchase a non-resident fee card for the price of $75.00, in accordance with the following:

a) A non-resident shall apply for a non-resident library card at the closest public library. The factor for determining the closest public library shall be the residence of the non-resident. Non-residents shall apply at the participating public library in the school district in which the non-resident has his or her principal residence unless, due to the commonality of community interests, library services at another library that is physically closer may better serve the needs of the non-resident.

b) If there are two or more public libraries in the school district in which a non-resident resides, the participating public libraries in that school district, in cooperation with the applicable regional library systems, shall determine the appropriate library service area for non-residents to make application for a non-resident library card.

c) If there is no participating public library in the school district in which the non-resident resides, the applicable regional library systems that serve the school district shall, in cooperation with participating libraries in the general area of the school district, determine the non-resident service area. The factor to be used for determining a non-resident service area shall be the commonality of community interests that influence the activities of all the residents of the service area.

If you reside beyond the jurisdictional boundaries of the Maple Park Public Library, but own property within the jurisdictional boundaries of the Maple Park Public Library, upon presentation of a tax bill bearing your name, you may have one library card for the exclusive use of the individual whose name appears on its face without additional payment as is the case with people who reside within the jurisdictional boundaries of the Maple Park Public Library.

Adults wishing to register for a borrower’s card, renew an expired borrower’s card, or replace a lost, stolen, damaged, or destroyed borrower’s card at the Maple Park Public Library must bring with them two forms of identification, at least one of which bears their name and address. These forms of identification include, but are not limited to, driver’s license, utility bills, mail, or voter’s registration card.
