Specially-Called Congregational Meeting

The Session moves that the congregation approves the following changes to our Bylaws: “Session and Congregational meetings may be conducted electronically by means of communication which allows for simultaneous aural communication, such as teleconference or videoconference. Any member participating in a meeting by such means shall be able to vote and be deemed present for the determination of a quorum." This means that the congregation or Session may meet by electronic means (in whole or in part) if all members have reasonable notice of the electronic meeting and the ability to discuss and vote on business items simultaneously. Notice of any meeting where attendance by electronic means may occur must include an adequate description of how to participate. Participation by this method constitutes presence in person at a meeting. The quorum for such a meeting is the same as for a non-electronic meeting.

Welcome & Call to Worship

[Psalm 1:3, 6; Ezekiel 37:14]

The Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

Those who delight in the law of the Lord are like trees planted by streams of water.

They yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither.

Thus says the Lord, “I will put my spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you on your own soil.”

Let us worship the LORD!

O Worship the King (Hymn 476)

Grant/attr. Haydn

O worship the King, all glorious above!

O gratefully sing God’s power and God’s love;

Our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days,

Pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise.

O tell of God’s might, O sing of God’s grace,

Whose robe is the light, whose canopy space.

The chariots of heaven the deep thunderclouds form,

And bright is God's path on the wings of the storm.

Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,

In Thee do we trust, nor find Thee to fail;

Thy mercies how tender, how firm to the end,

Our maker, defender, redeemer, and friend.

Confession

Spirit of the Living God, breathe new life into us today. Forgive us for our doubts and fears and the times we lose hope. Be near to us when we mourn people we have lost. Renew our faith in your resurrection. Breathe upon these weary bones of ours, and give us courage to live your will for us through Christ. Amen.

Resurrection not Resuscitation

Focus: If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.

Response: Come Boldly

Webber/Vaughan Williams

Eliana Starbuck

On a barren hilltop just outside the walls of an ancient city as the evening falls,

Speaks a dying figure hanging on a tree, saying “It is finished,” words of victory.

Tested just as we are, in a world of strife, through the pain and conflict of a human life,

Here at last completed with his final breath is a life triumphant over sin and death.

Let us then come boldly to the heavenly throne, where our human weakness is so fully known,

And the mercy given by which we are freed, and the grace provided for our time of need.

Pastoral Prayer & The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Welcome & Call to Worship

[Psalm 138]

We give you thanks, O LORD, for your steadfast love and your faithfulness;

For you have exalted your name and your word above everything.

On the day we called, you answered us, you increased our strength of soul.

The LORD will fulfill his purpose for us; your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever.

Let us worship the LORD!

God Is Here! (Hymn 461)

Green/Taylor

God is here! As we your people meet to offer praise and prayer,

May we find in fuller measure what it is in Christ we share.

Here, as in the world around us, all our varied skills and arts

Wait the coming of the Spirit into open minds and hearts.

Here are symbols to remind us of our lifelong need of grace;

Here are table, font, and pulpit; here the cross has central place.

Here in honesty of preaching, here in silence, as in speech,

Here, in newness and renewal, God the Spirit comes to each.

Here our children find a welcome in the Shepherd’s flock and fold,

Here, as bread and wine are taken, Christ sustains us as of old.

Here the servants of the Servant seek in worship to explore

What it means in daily living to believe and to adore.

Lord of all, of church and kingdom, in an age of change and doubt

Keep us faithful to the gospel, help us work your purpose out.

Here in this day’s dedication, all we have to give, receive:

We, who cannot live without you, we adore you! We believe!

Confession

God whose glory fills the earth, you call us in the midst of our ordinary lives and daily work. Your unexpected presence turns the world we thought we knew upside down. We can be embarrassed to discover how little we have understood, especially when we thought we were already on the right path. Help us care more about continuing to grow in relationships than about being right. Give us courage to follow you into places that are hungry for your Word. Amen.

Holy God, We Praise Your Name (Hymn 460)

Attr. Franz/Allgemeines Katholisches Gesangbuch

Holy God, we praise Your name; Lord of all, we bow before You;

All on earth Your scepter claim, all in heaven above adore You.

Infinite Your vast domain, everlasting is Your reign.

Hark, the glad celestial hymn angel choirs above are raising;

Cherubim and seraphim, in unceasing chorus praising,

Fill the heavens with sweet accord: Holy, holy, holy Lord.

All apostles join the strain as Your sacred name they hallow;

Prophets swell the glad refrain, and the blessed martyrs follow,

And from morn to set of sun, through the church the song goes on.

Welcome & Call to Worship

[Psalm 71]

In you, O Lord, we take refuge; let us never be put to shame.

Our mouths are filled with your praise, and with your glory all day long.

Do not cast us off in the time of old age; do not forsake us when our strength is spent.

O God, from our youth you have taught us, and we still proclaim your wondrous deeds.

You who have done great things, O God, who is like you?

We will hope continually, and will praise you yet more and more.

Let us worship the LORD!

Love Divine, All Loves Excelling (Hymn 376)

Prichard/Wesley

Love divine, all loves excelling, Joy of heaven to earth come down,

Fix in us Thy humble dwelling, all Thy faithful mercies crown!

Jesus, Thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love Thou art;

Visit us with Thy salvation, enter every trembling heart.

Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit into every troubled breast!

Let us all in Thee inherit, let us find the promised rest;

Take away the love of sinning, Alpha and Omega be;

End of faith, as its beginning, set our hearts at liberty.

Finish, then, Thy new creation; pure and spotless let us be;

Let us see Thy great salvation perfectly restored in Thee;

Changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place,

Till we cast our crowns before Thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise.

Confession

God of life, we admit to you and to each other that we have not always lived lives of love. We have lost patience and been rude. We have been irritable and insisted on our own way. We have valued power and control more than love. Forgive us and heal us, dear God, through Jesus Christ, your love incarnate. Give us hope and endurance as we commit again to the process of loving. Amen.

Song of Gratitude: O Love That Will Not Let Me Go

O love that will not let me go, I rest my weary soul in Thee:

I give Thee back the life I owe, that in Thine ocean depths its flow may richer, fuller be.

O light that follows all my way, I yield my flickering torch to Thee;

My heart restores its borrowed ray, that in Thy sunshine’s blaze its day may brighter, fairer be.

O joy that seekest me through pain, I cannot close my heart to Thee;

I trace the rainbow through the rain, and feel the promise is not vain that morn shall tearless be.

Welcome & Call to Worship

[Psalm 19]

The heavens are telling the glory of God; the firmament proclaims his handiwork.

There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard.

Yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.

Gather Us In

Haugen

Here in this place the new light is streaming;

now is the darkness vanished away;

See in this space our fears and our dreamings

brought here to you in the light of this day.

Gather us in, the lost and forsaken;

gather us in, the blind and the lame;

call to us now, and we shall awaken;

we shall arise at the sound of our name.

We are the young, our lives are a mystery.

We are the old who yearn for your face.

We have been sung throughout all of history,

Called to be light to the whole human race.

Gather us in, the rich and the haughty;

gather us in, the proud and the strong;

give us a heart, so meek and so lowly;

give us the courage to enter the song.

Not in the dark of buildings confining,

not in some heaven, light years away:

Here in this place the new light is shining;

Now is the kingdom, and now is the day.

Gather us in and hold us forever;

gather us in and make us your own;

Gather us in all peoples together,

fire of love in our flesh and our bone.

Confession

God of steadfast love, we are all baptized into Christ’s body and depend on one Spirit. We belong to you and to each other. To plan and work together that all may know Christ’s love.

So every folk and nation may feel God’s warm embrace.

Welcome & Call to Worship

[Isaiah 43:1-2]

Thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel:

Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;

when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.

Let us worship the LORD!

Out of Deep Unordered Water (Hymn 494)

Kaan/Parry

Out of deep, unordered water God created light and land,

World of bird and beast and, later, in God’s image, woman, man.

Refrain:

There is water in the river bringing life to tree and plant.

Let creation praise its giver: there is water in the font.

Water on the human forehead, birthmark of the love of God,

Is the sign of death and rising; through the seas there runs a road.

(Refrain)

Standing round the font reminds us of the Hebrews’ climb ashore.

Life is hallowed by the knowledge: God has been this way before.

(Refrain)

Confession

Redeeming God, we are precious in your sight. In the midst of trials, we often forget that we are beloved. Forgive us when we act as though we are not your creation. Lead us into this new year with a renewed sense of your presence and joy. May your Spirit work in us to realize your vision of a world made new in Christ. Amen.

Song of Gratitude: When Jesus Came to Jordan (Hymn 72)

Green/Mehrtens

When Jesus came to Jordan to be baptized by John,

He did not come for pardon, but as God’s Holy One.

He came to share repentance with all who mourn their sins,

To speak the vital sentence with which good news begins.

He came to share temptation, our utmost woe and loss;

For us and our salvation to die upon the cross.

So when the dove descended on him, the Holy One,

The hidden years had ended, the age of grace begun.

Wild and Lone the Prophet’s Voice

Daw/Parry

Wild and lone the prophet’s voice echoes through the desert still,

Calling us to make a choice, bidding us to do God’s will:

“Turn from sin and be baptized; cleanse your heart and mind and soul.

Quitting all the sins you prized, yield your life to God’s control.

“Bear the fruit repentance sows: lives of justice, truth, and love.

Trust no other claim than those; set your heart on things above.

Soon the Lord will come in power, burning clean the threshing floor,

Then will flames the chaff devour; wheat alone shall fill God’s store.”

With such preaching, stark and bold, John proclaimed salvation near,

And his timeless warnings hold words of hope to all who hear.

So we dare to journey on, led by faith through ways untrod,

Till we come at last like John to behold the Lamb of God.

Welcome & Call to Worship

[Psalm 147]

Praise the Lord! Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;

his understanding is beyond measure.

The Lord builds up broken cities; he gathers the outcasts, he lifts up the downtrodden.

He grants peace within your borders; he fills you with the finest of wheat.

The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.

Let us worship the LORD!

As With Gladness (Hymn 63)

Kocher/Dix

As with gladness men of old did the guiding star behold;

As with joy they hailed its light, leading onward, beaming bright;

So, most gracious Lord, may we evermore be led to Thee.

As with joyful steps they sped to that lowly manger bed,

There to bend the knee before him whom heaven and earth adore;

So may we with willing feet ever seek thy mercy seat.

As they offered gifts most rare at that manger rude and bare;

So may we with holy joy, pure, and free from sin’s alloy,

All our costliest treasures bring, Christ to Thee, our heavenly King.

Confession

God of gathering, thank you for adopting us into your family. Forgive us when we create division rather than reconciliation. Help us remember that you take pleasure in all who receive you. When your will for our lives seems unclear, show us the next step. Draw us closer to one another as you gather all things in Christ, and help us live for the praise of your glory. Amen.

Where they need no star to guide, where no clouds thy glory hide.

Of The Father’s Love Begotten (Hymn 309)

Prudentius/Plainsong, Mode V

Of the Father’s love begotten, ere the worlds began to be,

He is Alpha and Omega, he the source, the ending he,

Of the things that are, that have been, and that future years shall see,

Evermore and evermore!

O ye heights of heaven adore him; angel hosts, his praises sing;

Powers, dominions, bow before him, and extol our God and King;

Let no tongue on earth be silent, every voice in concert ring,

Evermore and evermore!

Christ, to thee with God the Father, and O Holy Ghost, to thee,

Hymn and chant and high thanksgiving and unwearied praises be:

Honor, glory, and dominion, and eternal victory,

Evermore and evermore!

Welcome & Call to Worship

[Psalm 148]

Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise him in the heights!

Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his host!

Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars!

Praise the Lord from the earth, you sea monsters and all deeps, fire and hail, snow and frost, stormy wind fulfilling his command!

Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth!

Young men and women alike, old and young together!

Let us praise the name of the LORD, for he commanded and we were created.

Let us worship the LORD!

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing (Carol 31)

Mendelssohn/Wesley

Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King,

Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!”

Joyful, all ye nations, rise, join the triumph of the skies;

With angelic host proclaim, “Christ is born in Bethlehem!”

Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!”

Christ, by highest heaven adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord!

Late in time behold him come, offspring of the virgin’s womb.

Veiled in flesh the God-head see; hail the incarnate Deity,

Pleased in flesh with us to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel.

Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!”

Hail! The heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail the sun of righteousness!

Light and life to all he brings, risen with healing in his wings.

Mild he lays his glory by, born that we no more may die,

Born to raise us from the earth, born to give us second birth.

Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!”

Confession

God of wonder, we are surrounded by your creation, yet we often miss the marvels you place before us. Forgive us when we lose our sense of belonging to you and forget our connection to all things. As your children, help us bear with one another with compassion and patience. May we seek your presence, listen to your teaching, and persist in love. Amen.

Gentle Mary Laid Her Child (Carol 27)

Arr. MacMillan/Cook

Gentle Mary laid her child lowly in a manger;

There he lay, the undefiled, to the world a stranger.

Such a babe in such a place, can he be the Savior?

Ask the saved of all the race who have found his favor.

Angels sang about his birth, wise men sought and found him;

Heaven’s star shone brightly forth, glory all around him.

Shepherds saw the wondrous sight, heart the angels singing;

All the plains were lit that night, all the hills were ringing.

Gentle Mary laid her child lowly in a manger;

He is still the undefiled, but no more a stranger.

Son of God, or humble birth, beautiful the story;

Praise his name in all the earth, hail the King of glory!

Christmas Eve

Christmas comes every time we see God in other persons.

The human and the holy meet in Bethlehem or in Times Square,

for Christmas comes like a golden storm on its way to Jerusalem determinedly, inevitably...

Even now it comes in the face of hatred and warring—

no atrocity too terrible to stop it, no Herod strong enough, no hurt deep enough,

no curse shocking enough, no disaster shattering enough.

For someone on earth will see the star, someone will hear the angel voices,

someone will run to Bethlehem, someone will know peace and goodwill:

the Christ will be born!

—Ann Weems, Kneeling in Bethlehem

Preparations

Welcome & Call to Worship

[Isaiah 9]

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;

those who lived in a land of deep darkness—on them light has shined.

For a child has been born for us, a son given to us.

Let the heavens be glad, let all the earth rejoice!

Let us worship the LORD!

O Come, All Ye Faithful (Hymn 41)

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant,

O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem!

Come, and behold Him, born the King of angels!

Refrain: O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him, Christ, the Lord!

Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation! Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above!

Glory to God, all glory in the highest! (refrain)

Confession

On this Christmas Eve we remember the remarkable way that you joined us in human flesh, living fully with us – and you came as a tiny, vulnerable baby. We are still in awe of the love and risk involved. Tonight, as we celebrate this tender yet profound act, we gather our prayers and we give you thanks, O God, for joining us. May your act of togetherness and compassion teach us how to ever more compassionately understand those around us and far away who are also made in your image. Amen.

Joy to the World (Hymn 40)

Watts/Handel

Joy to the world! The Lord is come: Let earth receive her King;

Let every heart prepare Him room,

And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing,

And heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

Joy to the world! The Savior reigns: Let us our songs employ;

While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains

Repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy,

Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground;

He comes to make his blessings flow,

Far as the curse is found, far as the curse is found,

Far as, far as, the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove

The glories of his righteousness

And wonders of His love, and wonders of his love,

And wonders, wonders of his love.

Silent night, holy night! Son of God, love’s pure light, radiant beams from Thy holy face,

With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

Advent Candle Lighting

[Isaiah 2:4, 11:6, 35:1, 7:14b]

The Gilberts

We light these candles as a sign of the coming light of Christ.

Advent means coming. We are preparing ourselves for the days

when nations shall beat their swords into plowshares,

and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword

against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.

The wolf shall live with the lamb,

the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion

and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them.

The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad,

the desert shall rejoice and blossom;

like the rose it shall blossom abundantly,

and rejoice with joy and singing.

The Lord shall give you a sign.

Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son,

and shall name him Immanuel (God is with us).

Let us walk in the light of the Lord.

It Came Upon the Midnight Clear (Hymn 38)

Willis/Sears

It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old

From angels bending near the earth, to touch their harps of gold:

“Peace on the earth, good will to all, from heaven’s all gracious King”:

The world in solemn stillness lay, to hear the angels sing.

And ye, beneath life’s crushing load, whose forms are bending low,

Who toil along the climbing way with painful steps and slow,

Look now! For glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing:

O rest beside the weary road, and hear the angels sing.

For lo, the days are hastening on, by prophet, bards foretold,

When with the ever-circling years comes round the age of gold;

When peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling,

And the whole world give back the song which now the angels sing.
