4-4-0 TYPE

AMERICAN STANDARD TYPE

Classes D, E, H and L

The 1900 renumbering divided the Maine Central 4-4-0 type locomotives into four classes according to cylinder bore. All had 24 inch strokes but Classes D, E, H and L had cylinder diameters of 16, 17, 18 and 19 inches, respectively. During the first decade of the twentieth century the Maine Central operated well over 100 American Standard type engines but many were antiquated and soon scrapped. Some were built as late as 1909, however. In 1923 all the small D Class engines were gone but there were still seven E Class, eighteen H Class and eight L Class locomotives operating. Over a dozen 4-4-0's operated into the 1930's and three lasted until mid 1942.
