ORANGE SHIRT DAY

I hold a lot of colonial privilege. These are not my stories to tell. I can only do my part by creating interest and space for learning in my students. Hopefully you can also honour indigenous voices to tell their own story. This is my part to pave the way for those conversations and voices, so they are not burdened with teaching the whole story, so they can share their personal story.

The slide deck is simply a presentation. Then we typically watch the CBC's Stolen Children Video. I provide a Content Warning as it does mention physical and sexual abuse, although not in graphic detail. Make sure to offer a safe pathway in, and a safe pathway out, and take care of each other. The T-shirt design can also be an intro to media.

PLEASE make sure to acknowledge that some of our students identify as indigenous, and that this lesson is about educating those with colonial or immigrant family heritage. It is very insulting to teach someone about their own culture. On the flip side, please do not burden students who identify as indigenous with speaking for their whole culture, or for other indigenous cultures.

Thank you to Gigi Shanks for her tireless learning and indigenous ally-ship. I am a better ally for you sharing your wide body of knowledge.
