This was a self-supported ride, meaning that everything we took was loaded on our bikes. No support van – that requires more organization. Being self-supported gives you the most flexbility, and is, in my opinion, the most fun.

The consensus was that we'd rely mostly on motels, altough we carried tents and camping gear for areas where lodging was not available. This was reinforced by some late freezing weather in northern Florida and the mountains, and some early hot weather in the desert West.
Once we got out of populated areas, motels were scarce and quality was variable. We also had some great experiences staying at bed & beakfast houses.

SInce Jim was retired military, we also stayed on-base at several of the military bases along the Mexican border.

Of course, cyclists turn any motel into a slum.
Food was whetever was available locally. Although we carried enough staples for a quick meal or two, we mostly ate in restaurants or bought groceries. Outside ppulated areas, this might mean general stores or gas stations.
