Fires in our area tend to be the most dynamic and most disastrous, as the gusting winds will drive the fire in a very erratic and fast movement. As a community, it is imperative that we contact the fire department IMMEDIATELY upon the first inkling of smoke or fire. The sooner the situation is discovered, the quicker it can be responded to before it becomes a situation out of control.
The only way to lessen our fire risk is to work together as a community with our fire departments to understand what to do to be fire wise.
Keep yards clear of trash and debris
Comply with tree removal standards in the areas immediately around your structures.
Reduce the ability of fire to climb into the tops of the trees by removing the bottom 6 feet of branches on each tree, not just around your house but through out your property.
Dispose of fireplace ashes outside only after they are completely cold (3-4 days), then place them in a metal covered trash can for another 3-4 days before spreading them outside
Be mindful of cigarettes and power tools that throw sparks
We can also help the fire department when they respond to calls.
Driveways should be at least 14 feet wide
Trim overhanging tree branches to 13 feet high for fire truck clearance
Have a 28-foot turning radius if you have a circular driveway or turnaround
Evacuation
Be prepared to evacuate! If a recommendation is made to evacuate, GO. Gather family members, collect your medications, assist handicap family members, and secure your pets so you can leave as quickly as possible. Keep all doors and windows closed, and turn off your utilities. This gives the fire department clear access to your property without blocking their efforts to save your home.

As we have time in the coming months, we will be working on plans specific to Luz del Sol on things we can do as a community to reduce our risk to fire and prepare. We’re small but isolated so we have to take care of each other.
