Seminar Unit
The Evolution of a Character
The Evolution of a Character
Here's a quick description of the project:
Show how a fictional character has changed over the years.
Relate some of the changes to the time period.
Prove that the character has become part of our culture.
Before the seminar is assigned, you will learn some information that will help you with your research. Below are the areas we will cover (some of them are linked).

If you're not sure how to begin, you can start with one of the following:
information on the author
trivia on the time period in which the work originated
a table of contents
a summary of the story your character is from
You could include some of the following:
trivia about the author or original story
some video clips
other early versions of the story
details about the time period the story first occurred in
some connections between early versions of the story and the time period, such as references to wars, nuclear power, racism, sexism, inventions, trends in society, etc. For example, early children's literature, such as Cinderella, was more violent because parents thought children should be scared into making the right decisions.
You could include some of the following:
Modern movies trailers, TV shows, cartoons, commercials, comics, memes, etc.
POSTMODERN ELEMENTS: parodies, pastiche, disrespect, etc.
Again, when possible, make some connections between the modern versions of the story and the time period.
Q. HOW CAN I MAKE CONNECTIONS TO OUR TIME PERIOD?
A. See if your modern versions make references to modern events such as terrorism, pandemics, political correctness, the Iraq War, modern inventions, current controversial issues, more diverse characters, more violence, stronger female characters, more sexualized female characters, less stereotypical male characters, villains with some action, explosions, glitz, and product placement—these are also elements you can look for.
You could make allusions to the character in:
products, ads, costumes, clothing styles, theme parks, memes, comics, jokes
song references, expressions (ex. the "Cinderella Complex")
In class, I will show you a slide show on Frankenstein. Here are some Google searches that I used: Frankenstein Trivia, Frankenstein Facts, Frankenstein Products, Frankenstein Funny, Modern Frankenstein, Women in Frankenstein, Frankenstein References, Frankenstein Allusions, Gay Frankenstein, Frankenstein Adaptations, Frankenstein Kids, Frankenstein Honest Trailer (you can get some great info out of these, but make sure they're appropriate if you show this in class)
