Integrating Quotations

1. Use an explanatory phrase (lead-in), but not a complete sentence:

The narrator's anxiety is seen when he says, "I felt chilled to the bone despite the fire blazing in the centre of the room." (4)

2. Make the quotation part of your sentence.

The narrator was so nervous that he felt "chilled to the bone despite the fire blazing in the centre of the room." (4)

3. Use short quotations—only a few words—as part of your own sentence:

The narrator was so nervous that he felt "chilled to the bone" despite the fact that a fire was "blazing" in the room. (4)

If none of these work, then:

4. Introduce the quotation with a complete sentence and a colon:

The narrator expresses how his anxiety affected his physical state: "I felt chilled to the bone despite the fire blazing in the centre of the room." (4)
