And not painting picturesand "hoping" to sell them!
Once it is painted &"on the shelf"it loses value.
It is of no use to the artist.he HAS to sell it.Sooner or later.There is rent to pay!
The client knows thisHe will knock the price down,& get a "bargain"!
But clients can be very fickle.& just might wander off . .The artist gets desperate!Calls him back, andcomes down in price !!!
That's why artists are POOR!!

Let us turn the situation back to front . .
Let the client COMMISSION a painting.
Now it is something that is createdESPECIALLY for the client.
A portrait is the obvious choicebut no money in portraits
Therefore it has VALUE.And worth a higher price . .
AND the artist gets some money upfrontBEFORE it is even started . . .

Took me a long time to discover what to doToo longAnd then only because someoneplayed a nasty trick& left me floundering !
- - AND a stroke of luck
( It was "Now or never" !! )
The answer?Sign painting
- after many false starts . . .
- (In 1976, I finally gave up!)

Every business man wants his "Name in lights" !!And BIG, so everyone can see!
It was not "Signwriting" his name, as such.
It was "Advertising" his name.An investment.It promised more money!
Hardly knows what a "Font" is.Why should he?(That basin in church where they christen babies?)
So, "Capital letters - Big as possible!"
When he can afford it,he'll get a flashing neon sign.

And painting his name on a truck , window, shop front,was the only way to do it.Because the Computer's "Sticky" letteringhad not yet been invented!!(in 1980)So that suited me fine!

to all those in "crummy" jobs!!
