Advanced SNA

Overview

Location: BPC 124

Instructor: Steve Borgatti.

This is a 4-day (Mon-Thu) workshop designed for people interested in both a deeper and broader look at network theory and methods. It is assumed that participants have used UCINET before and are conversant with network concepts. Topics include: analysis of network change, advanced centrality methods advanced approaches to 2-mode data, analyzing negative ties, working with multiple relations, and testing hypotheses using QAP. In addition, participants will learn more about UCINET and NETDRAW efficiently (including powerful undocumented features). Finally, we will analyze some substantial datasets that are more interesting than the toy datasets we usually use for teaching.

Topics

    • UCINET installation

    • Graph theory

    • Relations

    • Matrices

    • Importing data

    • Working with data

    • Advanced centrality

    • Centrality with node attributes

    • Homophily and influence

    • Testing dyadic hypotheses with QAP

    • Simple models of network change

Software

UCINET 6 for Windows is used. The software is provided on a trial basis -- the user may purchase it later if they wish to. Mac and Linux users: Please note this is Windows software only. See this FAQ for more information.

It is strongly suggested that you download and install the software well before coming to the workshop in order to iron out any problems. Then download it again on the eve of the workshop to get the latest version.
