Process

As a group of explorers, you will be keeping a log of the places you go, the people you meet, and the information you gather along the way. Follow the steps to complete your mission.

1. Gather with your group. Decide upon roles. The roles include Route Expert, Plant/Animal Observer, and Historian.

Route Expert - Keeps a timeline of places visited and the events that occurred there. As you research, you should be deciding which places/events were the most important to place in the timeline. Keep your notes on this worksheet.

Plant/Animal Observer - Keeps track of the plants and animals that were discovered on the journey. Keep your notes on these worksheets: plants, animals.

Historian - Describes who Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis, and William Clark were. Describes what the purpose of the expedition was and why Lewis and Clark were chosen for this expedition. Also, research the Louisiana Purchase and what this meant to the United States. Keep your notes on this worksheet.

If you have a fourth person in your group, you should have 2 people with the same role (your group can decide which role will have 2 people).

2. View the videos below to get an overview of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Take notes as necessary.

• Lewis and Clark Expedition (Discovery Education) – Watch this clip to learn about the expedition and their guide, Sacagawea. You will need to login to your Discovery Education site to view the clip.
• The Lewis and Clark Expedition – Watch this clip to learn the objectives of the mission and what was discovered along the way.
• Lewis and Clark - Great Journey West (National Geographic) - Watch this clip to learn about the mission and be introduced to Lewis and Clark.

3. Use the sites below to discover the places Lewis and Clark visited, the people they met, the plants and animals they discovered, and the events that occurred along the way. Keep track of dates, places, and important information you find. Remember to also keep track of the website addresses you used as references. You will need to add them to your presentation.

• Interactive Trail Map - A map of the Lewis and Clark trail. Just click on places along the map to learn about what happened and what was discovered at that place.
• Edgate – Lewis and Clark Expedition - This site explains the expedition and shows pictures of some of the animals and plants they discovered on their journey. There are also links to biographies on Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis, and William Clark, in addition to information on the Louisiana Purchase.
• Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation - This site has several links that will be useful including “History of the Expedition”, “Expedition Timeline”, and “Discovering Lewis and Clark from the Air” which is an interactive map. Feel free to explore all of these links.
• National Geographic – Lewis and Clark Journals - You will be able to read excerpts from Lewis and Clark’s journal and read about their journey. As you progress through this site, there is a map that shows you where the journal entry refers to. You can also click on pictures of animals and plants that Lewis and Clark saw on their journey to learn more about them.
• Gutenberg Lewis and Clark Journals - This is the complete version of the journals of Lewis and Clark. You can click on any day of the journey and read what Lewis and Clark wrote.
• Biography of Meriwether Lewis - Read all about Meriwether Lewis on this site.
• Biography of William Clark - Read all about William Clark on this site.

4. After you have collected all of your information, meet as a group and discuss what you have learned. Each person should tell your group mates what your role is and what you researched. Then, as a group, decide how you want to plan your Meograph. Use the template below to plan out your presentation.

5. Select pictures for your presentation. Go back to the sites above and find pictures for your presentation. Save the pictures to your group's USB jump drive. If you haven't received your jump drive, please ask your teacher for it.

6. Create your presentation. Go to the Meograph website (www.meograph.com). Use the username and password that your teacher has given you to sign in. If you haven't received your username and password, please ask your teacher for it.

• Introduction - Add a picture and a title for your presentation. One member of your group will record the narration for the information your group wrote for your introduction.
• Timeline slides - Click on "Add a moment". Include what happened, when it happened, and where it happened. Remember to add a picture to each slide and write a short sentence to describe the slide. Also, add a website link that you used during your research on each slide. Then, have a member of your group record the narration for the information you wrote about each moment. Take turns recording so everyone gets a chance to record their voice. You will need to add 8 moments.
• Conclusion - This slide can only have narration. Have one person in your group record the narration for the information you wrote for your conclusion. This slide should answer the prompt "Do you think the Lewis and Clark expedition was important to the United States (support your answer with evidence that you learned during the WebQuest).

Remember to save your presentation often, so you don't lose anything.

7. Share your presentation. Click on the "Share" button. Then click on "Embed". Copy the code and paste it into a Google document. Share the document with your teacher.
