Dedication

This book is dedicated to those who have inspired it's creation. Special thanks to The Honorable Lord Knut Eldfimr, The Honorable Lord Mael Marden, The Honorable Lady Brilliana de Montreau, Lord Lothar vom Bergenwald, Lady Lydia of the Pines, Lord Otagiri Tatsuzo, and Lady Alexandria Morgan without whose support and understanding this book would not have been possible.

The History

Drawn from the mists of time, this work attempts to weave the threads of legend into the cloth of history. As with all legends, many of the details have become blurred by the passage of time. Wherever needed, an attempt has been made to fill in any gaps. Those gaps which remain should be filled with the image of a mighty dragon, a knight in shining armor, and a fair damsel. Thus begins the history of Dragonsspine.

Named for the breathtaking Garden of the Gods Park which lies in the heart of Colorado Springs at the foot of Pikes Peak and the beautiful Rocky Mountains, Les Jardin des Dieux was founded in Anno Societas VIII, being 1973 as decreed by His Eminence, Pope Gregory XIII, by a small group of Atenveldt's finest members from the Colorado Springs region. The group began as an incipient shire to the grand Barony of Caerthe.

Among those first illustrious members are Lord James Qui Connait, and Lady Ilana Amante. Lord James and Lady Ilana were present when the shire was founded. They are the only members of the founding group who still reside in the Barony of Dragonsspine. They have the distinction of being the only members of the founding group to remain active throughout the entire life of the shire and barony. They have dedicated many years to working with the offices of the group including herald, list's mistress, and art & sciences. Their skills at needle craft are the envy of the barony.

The group's name, "Les Jardin des Dieux", was submitted to the College of Heralds for approval with high hopes. When the College of Heralds returned the first name, "Dragonsspine" was chosen as an alternate. This name and the arms which would later be registered were in recognition of the resemblance which the panorama of the Rocky Mountain ridges in the Colorado Springs region bear to the backbone of a sleeping dragon. The College of Heralds' acceptance of the new name for registration was met with great joy. In Anno Societas X, being 1975 Gregorian, the Steward of the Society, with the full support of the Kingdom of Atenveldt and the Barony of Caerthe, granted official status to the shire. Her boundaries were set to encompass the entire south-eastern corner of Colorado. The shire grew and prospered for many years and in May, Anno Societas XII, being 1977 Gregorian, the shire of Dragonsspine gained a Prince and Princess to guide them with the founding of the Principality of the Outlands within the Kingdom of Atenveldt.

During the youth of the shire and the barony, many gentles appeared from afar to grace the group with their skills and talents. Among those gentles were Graf Albert von Dreckenveldt, Grafin Selene of the Sky, Lord Harold Thredar known as Harold the Herald, and Ton the Traveler.

Graf Albert and Grafin Selene came to Dragonsspine in September, 1978, from the Middle Kingdom where they had ruled wisely as both Crown and Coronet. They had the honor of serving as founding Baron and Baroness of the barony of Wurm Wald. Graf Albert was victorious in the Atenveldt Crown Tournaments and once again placed the Crown on his lady's brow on July 4, Anno Societas XVI, being 1981 Gregorian. Duke Albert is Premier Chevalier and Premier Laurel of the Outlands. He received the Companion of the Stag's Tines from the Principality of the Outlands. Duke Albert's exploits on the field of combat during Pennsic War IV have been celebrated in filk by the noted Midrealm knight Moonwolf. Moonwolf's filk about that famous event, "You Can't Swing a Broadsword in the Forest," has been a favorite around campfires and at conventions for nearly 20 years. Duchess Selene has dedicated her time to many offices within the barony, including Seneschal, Arts and Sciences, and Chronicler. She has offered her home as a gathering place and center of activity for the barony for over 16 years. She is the founder and principal instructor of the Dragonsspine Naval Academy for beladi dancing.

Perhaps the most active and famous herald of the early days, Lord Harold Thredar was devoted to the barony during it's early years. He is still spoken of with awe by those who remember him. He was awarded the Leaping Stag from the Principality of the Outlands and Her Majesty Selene of Atenveldt bestowed the Queen's Grace upon him. As his name suggests, he was fond of the tradition of punning names. Both Harold "the Herald" and Thredar, which gives him one more door than those English monarchs, help to paint a vivid picture of this genial man.

Known as "The King Under the Mountain", Ton the Traveler resided in Dragonsspine during his reign of Atenveldt in Anno Societas XII. His nickname was merited by his mundane employment with NORAD which placed him "under the mountain" during much of his reign. Ton with his lady, Elizabeth, also reigned twice as Lord and Lady of the Outlands during Anno Societas IX and X.

February of Anno Societas XIV hosted the first of one of the longest running events to be sponsored by the group, Candlemas. This event takes it's name from the church festivals for the commemoration of the presentation of Christ in the temple and the purification of the Virgin Mary. Candlemas in Dragonsspine is a celebration of the coming spring. It is a time to feast and practice the gentler arts of our times. Candlemas boasts an incomparable feast, the occasional tourney, games, fund raisers, dancing, trivia competitions, a Grand Processional and displays of the finest creations of the barony's seamstresses. It is an event which has lasted over 16 years with numerous autocrats.

In May, Anno Societas XIV, being 1978 Gregorian, the group was granted full baronial status. Caitlin Caslean an Bharraigh became the founding Baroness, holding the lands of Dragonsspine securely for Their Majesties, Theo and Salene, and Their Highnesses, Heinrich and Irminsul. She proudly bore the nickname bestowed upon her by her people throughout her reign, "The Dragoness of Baronsspine". During the first year of her reign, Caitlin would move to the Barony of Caerthe, some 50 miles to the north. While Baroness, Caitlin traveled to Dragonsspine often and the barony never felt neglected. Residency requirements for coronets would later be established to ensure a local presence to represent The Crown, but that would be long after our beloved baroness took her leave of our group.

Lady Eleanor Alden of Dragonstar was the first Herald of the Barony of Dragonsspine. Her penchant for writing included the composition of bawdy madrigals and the concoction of puns. She was the autocrat and creator of the "Matriarchy Revels" which boasted costuming and traditions from many renowned pre-period "matriarchal" cultures. She is believed to have been the first fencer in the barony. She is currently writing melodramas in the mundane world.

Otagiri no kami Tatsuzo was the first gentle to recreate the Japanese culture in the barony. His samurai garb and armor have been distinguished for their accuracy and fine appearance. It has been reported that Otagiri's armor has been the first to be scavenged after battles. Otagiri's roommates, many of the early officers of the barony, have been heard to comment on his earnest attempts to recreate period armoring techniques. His interest in authentic boiled leather armor was not quelled by his roommates' lack of enthusiasm for the odor of the chemicals used in the process. Otagiri has continued to perfect his period armor techniques and his interest has moved on to lacquered fabric armoring techniques. During the reign of Freana and Richenda, Otagiri squired to Sir Nicholas DeKane of the barony of Caerthe in Anno Societas XIX, being 1984 Gregorian. In a remarkable demonstration of faith with his Scottish knight, this devout samurai donned his alternate persona, Lord Andrew Ian MacFarlane, complete with a great kilt for one of his two squiring ceremonies. For the other, he and his knight wore the garb of samurai. The strong bond between knight and squire has endured to this day.

Baroness Caitlin oversaw the creation of the Order of the Gentle Dragon to recognize displays of courtesy within the barony, the Scales of Dragonsspine for service to the barony, and the Dragon's Blood for excellence in the Arts and Sciences. She installed Michael the Strange, Seamus Glas, and Phyllis of the White Marches, respectively, as Premiers of the orders. Baroness Caitlin also founded the first baronial guard known as "The Lightly Mounted Fleet of Foot." The original members of the guard were Duke Albert von Dreckenveldt, Lord Gerwyn y Tiegr, Sir Michael the Strange, and Lord Olaf Bjornson.

Lord Gerwyn y Tiegr became a squire to Duke Albert in Anno Societas XIX. Lord Tiegr fought in the first Outlands crown tournament. He began fighting in Anno Societas XIV, being 1978 Gregorian, while in his early teens, making him one of the youngest fighters to become eligible for the coveted Venerable Guard of the Outlands after more than 17 years of combat. He has worked with armoring, sword crafting, marshaling, fighting, and teaching for most of his time in the Society. He became the Premier Pondscum, a title given to those notable and incorrigible teens who show both promise and hope of outgrowing the title, during Baroness Caitlin's reign. He was also one of the original "Lightly Mounted Fleet of Foot" baronial guardsmen. He is an excellent fighter and difficult to lose in a crowd. His gambeson of bright orange and black tiger stripes accented with hand worked "grotesque" face knee cops and cat face helm stand out in any crowd.

In addition to the Baronial awards, Baroness Caitlin also bestowed her personal award, the Meritorious Order of Unusual Sensual Excesses known as the MOUSE, upon worthy individuals. Although this award holds neither precedence nor official recognition, it has been registered and recorded in the annals of the College of Heralds to the Institution for the Preservation of Outlands Culture (IPOC). Baroness Caitlin also created the title of "Pondscum" to fondly recognize those teenagers who were incorrigible but showed promise of maturing. She created Gerwyn y Tiegr as the Premier of the order. The title can only be passed on to another teen once the holder has been deemed to have outgrown it. The title was passed to Coineanach McIan in Anno Societas XXIII, being 1988 Gregorian. Having outgrown the title, Coineanach is currently contemplating the choice of his successor.

During her tenure as baroness, Caitlin found it necessary to take a brief sojourn from her official duties. To guard her people during her absence, she enlisted Sir Michael the Strange as Vicar to the barony. Sir Michael's vicarage was peaceful. He governed from July, Anno Societas XVIII, until January, Anno Societas XVIII. No mention of early barony members could be complete without Michael the Strange. Renowned for charming the ladies and contesting the gentlemen, Sir Michael also worked industriously to live up to his epithet of "the Strange." His distinctive helm bore bat wings and his arms bore both bats and a bell. Although his arms suggest he may have kept bats in his belfry, most people would agree that it is unlikely. Sir Michael was able to weather any storm with skill and success. Given his wealth of charms and skill, it can be argued that he kept much larger game in his belfry. Upon Caitlin's return, Sir Michael relinquished his charge unto her care and sought his leisure within the barony. Legend holds that Sir Michael has retired to the West Kingdom to pursue his fame.

Baroness Caitlin's reign also saw the formation of the Shire of Aarquelle to the south. The shire began around the cities and towns in Pueblo County, in the southeastern portion of the state of Colorado. Aarquelle's name translates as "eagle's fountain" and commemorates the city's symbol, the eagle, and her abundance of water resources. Her founding members endeavored to create a strong group in the area. With the support of the barony and her people, Aarquelle achieved recognition as a fully independent shire before the end of Caitlin's reign.

Aarquelle was graced by many distinguished gentles over the years. The founding seneschal, Lord Sealey Magna Scriba, worked with the shire from her earliest days until Anno Societas XXVIII, when he passed the shire into the care of Lady Ximena Alaha de Lorca. During his time as seneschal, Lord Sealey worked to teach wood crafts, armoring, music, and archery to the members of the populace. He hosted the shire's meetings and practices as well as many events throughout his tenure. His steadfast leadership has kept this small group together for many years.

Another founding member of Aarquelle is Lady Phyllis Meistersshon. Lady Phyllis has served the shire as chronicler, reeve, hospitaller, arts and sciences officer, and teacher. Lady Phyllis has been instructing members of the populace in music on such varied subjects as embroidery, card weaving, the bells, cymbals, drums, and recorder, as well as teaching the populace renaissance dance and leading the recorder choir throughout her many years in the shire.

Other notables who graced the shire during the early years include Sir Inigo Needham Bledsoe and Mistress Susan the Midwife, currently Baron and Baroness of Al-Barran, Lady Lêofsige Õ Caoimh known as Lyssa, currently seneschal of Dragonsspine, and Lady Audrey la Solitaire, currently proprietor of Herbs and Oddities in the barony of Dragonsspine.

During the last years of Baroness Caitlin's reign, Lord Knut the Inflammable became the baronial herald. Lord Knut became a squire to Duke Albert in Anno Societas XIX. Lord Knut was one of the original creators and autocrats of the Viking Vintr Vunderlandt events. His choice of persona, Viking, greatly influenced the young group. The strong Viking influence he provided is still in evidence today. He has served as baronial herald twice. He has also been active with the waterbearers guild, marshals, teaching, and sword crafting. He has been heard to fondly recall the time he narrowly escaped the office of White Stag Principal Herald of the Outlands.

As is proper for a Viking noble, Lord Knut is also noted for his large herd of reindeer. Among the oldest of the reindeer in the barony, Rolf, is well traveled and founded a lasting alliance with Atenveldt early in his SCA career, having sojourned among Her Majesty Tamzin's moose harem in Atenveldt. This sojourn was prompted by the misguided but well meaning attempt of one of Tamzin's guards to return this stray "moose" to Her Majesty. When Tamzin discovered the addition of a reindeer to her harem, she grew concerned that the reindeer's family would fear for his safety. She resolved to return this wandering reindeer to his home with a little "interest". Interest the Rein-moose, is well grown and a credit to his dam and her royal family. The reindeer have since founded their own sub-chapter of the Mighty Federated Households of Thunder, Rolling Thun-deer, which has lobbied for the protection of reindeer around the known world. This mighty household of reindeer has provided services such as water bearing at the great Estrella Wars and other large events, earning the title "Rein-man" for their guide, guardian, and Premier of the Companion of the Reindeer, Lord Knut.

A great part of the Viking influence is reflected in the Viking Vintr Vunderlandt events. The concept of the Viking events was to learn more about the recreation, sports and food of the Norse people. Among the numerous activities enjoyed at these events were greased "pig" chases, hammer, ax, spear, and knife throwing, and the "maiden" carry races. The food included such Nordic delicacies as ludefisk and fish pudding. This popular event was held annually for five years. It has also propagated similar events for the more Celtic-ly minded and joint Celtic/Norse events.

Baroness Caitlin served the barony well until June, Anno Societas XX, being 1985 Gregorian, when she passed her lands and her people into the vigilant hands of Sir Olaf Bjornson. Sir Olaf would hold the lands as vicar for Baroness Caitlin until December, Anno Societas XX. Baroness Caitlin was granted an Augmentation of Arms by Their Majesties Brion and Adriana when she relinquished her office to travel other regions of the known world.

Sir Olaf Bjornson appeared the picture of a Viking noble with his blond hair and stately bearing as he presided over courts within the barony. Squired to Duke Albert, Olaf was knighted in Anno Societas XVII and became the second vicar of Dragonsspine for Baroness Caitlin in June, Anno Societas XX. He was confirmed as the second Baron of Dragonsspine in December, Anno Societas XX. Baron Olaf governed the barony in residence for Their Majesties and Highnesses throughout the progression of the Outlands from Principality to Kingdom. Baron Olaf oversaw the creation of the Dragon's Claw for excellence in the art of combat. He was installed as Premier of the order by his successors.

Among Baron Olaf's squires, the most renowned was Haroun ibn al Dhi'b al Abyadh. Lord Haroun was knighted in Anno Societas XXIV. He fought well in the first Outlands crown tournament. Throughout the kingdom's history, Sir Haroun has fought in nearly every Outlands crown tournament. Sir Haroun has served as the barony's Knight Marshal and authorizing marshal for the Outlands. Not long after the creation of the kingdom of the Outlands, Sir Haroun journey to the East. Along the way he rescued his fair lady, Daifa A'isha al-Balansiyyahi known as Dovita from the Middle Kingdom. Together, they have worked for the welfare of the barony and the kingdom throughout our history.

Baron Olaf's reign saw the creation of Collegio de los Tigres de las Montanas. The name translates as "The College of the Tigers of the Mountains" in acknowledgment of the college's mascot, the tiger. The college was affectionately known as Tygre's Keep. The college was founded by and for the students of Colorado College. The college continues to thrive and has officially changed it's name to Tygre's Keep to the enormous relief of heralds everywhere.

Tygre's Keep began the tradition of the annual Feast of Fools early in its life and the event has continued for many years. This event boasts both heavy and light weapons tourneys during the day, a fine feast in the evening, and a costume pun contest after dinner. The winners of the pun contest are dubbed the King and Queen of Misrule. The King and Queen reign over the festivities throughout the evening and hold their title until the next year. Lord James Qui Connait is one of the most renowned punsters of the barony and is credited with the inspiration of many of the entries each year. Among the festivities held over the years have been the Court of Love, Clench-a-Wench, and dancing.

In May, Anno Societas XXIII, being 1988 Gregorian, a grand event was organized in the northern reaches of the kingdom. Lady Dovita and Sir Haroun autocrated the first Brigands Bizarre. This event had strong competition from the popular southern event Outlandish. It also had many attractions in the form of inventive forms of combat to pit the Brigands against the Merchants. After it's first successful year, this event has taken hold of the minds and hearts of many gentles. Brigands VI was held this year with a strong turnout and thoughts are turning to Brigands X. The brightest spot on the Brigands horizon has been strong attendance at both Outlandish and Brigands, as the kingdom has grown large enough to support both!

Baron Olaf lead his people until June, Anno Societas XXIV, being 1989 Gregorian, when he passed them unto the care of Master Demetrios ho Bibliophilos and The Honorable Lady Melissa of Winged Hills. Baron Olaf continued to reside in the barony until Anno Societas XXVII, being 1992 Gregorian In the years that followed his governance, he would twice hold the throne of the Outlands with his noble consort, Mistress Jeanne d'Aussay. In the course of those reigns, he would again directly administer the baronial holdings of Dragonsspine.

Master Demetrios ho Bibliophilos and The Honorable Lady Melissa of Winged Hills became Vicars of the Barony in June, Anno Societas XXIV, being 1989 Gregorian They brought a wealth of knowledge to the office from the Middle Kingdom to aid the transition of the coronet. Master Demetrios served the kingdom as master of the Kingdom Scribes Guild and is noted for his wondrous scrolls and fine hand. THL Melissa has served in many offices including baronial reeve. Their wise leadership continued until October, Anno Societas XXIV, when they passed the barony's care into the hands of Baron Lambert de Sur. Master Demetrios and THL Melissa took their leave to serve their barony and kingdom through other offices.

Baron Lambert de Sur accepted the responsibility of guiding the barony from the Vicars and replaced the coronet on a Baron's head. Baron Lambert brought to the position his erudition and seasoning as Palentine Baron of the Barony of the Western Seas. Baron Lambert oversaw the creation of the Dragon's Spawn to recognize promising youth within the barony. He installed as Premier Jasmina bint Haroun, later known as Ara.

In the summer of Anno Societas XXV, Favor Tourney was created by Lady Brilliana and Lady Dovita as a local fund-raising event. The center pieces of these events are the favors crafted by ladies and gentlemen throughout the kingdom. Each fighter and fencer collects as many "favors" from the ladies or gentlemen of the kingdom as they can. Favors are won, lost, and ransomed throughout the tourney. Favors can also be entered into competition for the most period, largest, most elaborate, most decadent, and anything else the autocrats can come up with. The highlight of the fund raising is the auction of the Baroness' favor. During many of the years of the event, our Baroness was also our Queen and bidders came from afar to bid for the privilege of carrying Her Majesty's favor. The highest price paid for a favor was $100 by a joint effort of two households within the barony. To the delight of the ladies of the barony, the current Baron also offers a favor for auction. This fine event continues to lighten the late summers in the barony.

Lord Lothar vom Bergenwald and Lady Lydia of the Pines came to the barony from the populace of the nearby mountains in Anno Societas XIX, being 1984. Lord Lothar squired to Duke Albert in Anno Societas XXII and began to learn the arts of armoring and fighting. Lord Lothar has served as authorizing marshal and Knight Marshal of the barony. Lady Lydia has served in offices including mistress of the lists and arts and sciences. Lady Lydia is also renowned for her skills at autocrating and has hosted numerous events including Viking Vintr Vunderlandt and the Outland's Fifth Year Celebration.

During the summer of Anno Societas XXVI, the barony had the singular distinction of hosting the Outland's fifth anniversary celebration. The event garnered many compliments throughout the kingdom and abundant discussions. The activities included many heavy weapons tourneys, a wonderful feast and much reminiscing about the preceding five years. The event was successful and, at the conclusion of the event, myriad ideas were exchanged for the planning of the tenth anniversary celebration. Though successful, this fine event was ill-fated. As with many momentous celebrations, political rivalries and differences were brought into the forefront. Though this event was a coup for the barony, its existence served to fuel many of the fires within the barony and the kingdom.

Baron Lambert's reign occurred during a period of rapid growth within the barony. As the population grew, so did the weight of the coronet. The difficulties which often occur in baronies began to take their toll on the baron and the populace. Baron Lambert guided the populace through troubled times until the autumn of Anno Societas XXVI, being 1991 Gregorian, when he relinquished his charge to Their Majesties protection. Baron Lambert took his leave of public service for a time, but returned to guide and serve the barony and the kingdom.

The years had not all been peaceful within the barony. As has happened with many a large group, strife and political designing had become prevalent. Transitions and conflicts within the group produced a decline in unity. The difficulties and discord which occurred should remain quietly a part of our history, but the results must be noted. By the autumn of Anno Societas XXVI, Their Royal Majesties, Irel and Tess, determined that Their direct leadership and intervention was needed to protect and preserve the strength that remained. And so, at Their command, the baronial coronet was passed directly to the Crown of the Outlands. The Barony achieved the distinction of becoming the Premier Crown Barony in the kingdom. The barony's tenure as a Crown Barony was recommended to last roughly two years. Their Majesties, Irel and Tess, counseled Their heirs and successors to guide the people and restore the vitality, culture, and peace of Dragonsspine.

There followed a succession of Crown's to reign over the land and people of Dragonsspine. Each Crown, exercising Their whims and in Their own fashions, served the barony well. The deeds of Their Majesties are recorded elsewhere in the annals of the Outlands by the hands of Their Own historians and hence are not included here. The progression of Crowns, left little guidance within the barony and the years brought myriad changes to the group. Many old friends quietly withdrew from the forefront, while new friends appeared. Alliances, both old and new, were created and dwindled.

During this time, the barony grew but the knowledge and traditions suffered. The reputation of the barony and her people foundered. The withdrawal of long time active members from the scene allowed the knowledge of the barony's ancestry to falter. Those who came to populate the barony were left ignorant of her lineage and origins.

Despite the difficulties, Their Majesties intent was fulfilled. The people began to resolve their differences and the problems began to be remedied. Events continued to be hosted and to thrive. Interest in the art of fence was born locally and the sport rapidly attracted many members of the populace. Through the hard work and support of fencers, both local and distant, the sport blossomed.

During these troubled years two popular events, Gypsy Christmas and Shake the Midwinter Blues, garnered large followings. Gypsy Christmas began as an annual December activity. The basic theme was a holiday celebration with a gift exchange. The theme provided for very mobile gifts as what one person opened might be "traded" by anyone who took a fancy to it. This lead to a very lively exchange and a fine time for all. The gift exchange also provided a fine opportunity to redistribute many of the useful items which accumulate throughout the year. Shake the Midwinter Blues began as a late winter-early spring middle eastern revel. Drumming and beladi dancing proliferated with costumes ranging from authentic middle eastern to western cabaret belly dance scarves and just about everything in between. The addition of a small site fee and a pot-luck feast made this a delightful and economical occasion.

Upon Their ascension to the throne in May, Anno Societas XXVIII, being 1993 Gregorian, Their Royal Majesties, Leif II and Elisheva, determined to resolve the remaining difficulties in the barony. Their reign brought about the farthest reaching changes since the installation of the founding baroness. They labored to return the great responsibility of caring for a barony to the charge of a coronet. A new award was created, The Dragon's Barb, later renamed the Dragon's Grace, for excellence in the art of Fence. They established Lord Richard of Bainbridge as the Premier. At last, through Their indulgence, guidance, and patience, a new coronet was chosen to lead the barony. Lord Mael Marden and Lady Brilliana de Montreau were given charge of the barony and her people.

Baron Mael Marden known as Dane and Baroness Brilliana de Montreau accepted the duty and responsibility of leading the barony in October of Anno Societas XXVIII, being 1993 Gregorian. A new era was established which heralded success and peace for the barony. Ancient traditions were revived and new traditions created. The order of the day was a return to peace and prosperity. Pageantry began to return to the barony.

Lord Mael Marden came to the barony in Anno Societas XX. He fought in many crown tourneys. He has become renowned as one of the finest armorers in the northern part of the realm. Lady Brilliana de Montreau also came to the barony in Anno Societas XX. Lady Brilliana's skill at needlecraft is renowned throughout the kingdom. Her skills are sought by many in need of consultation and needlework. In a story filled with romance, this noble couple pledged their troth. In January, Anno Societas XXVIII, at Caerthan Twelfth Night, Lord Dane and Lady Brilliana received Grants of Arms from the hands of Their Majesties, Cyrred II and Morgana. The Honorable Lord Mael Marden and The Honorable Lady Brilliana de Montreau continue to reign over this noble barony.

New to the barony, but extremely active is Thorsen the Wanderer. At fourteen, Thorsen organized, founded, and headed the Runner's Guild for gentles between the ages of six and sixteen. This guild provides support for marshals, heralds, mol's, and autocrats. Thorsen is also warranted Pursuivant Extraordinary and an active field and book herald. He has recently been recognized by Their Majesties, Artan IIII and Aziza, with an Award of Arms, making him the youngest recipient of this award in the Kingdom.

Their Excellencies created the Order of the Guardian of the Golden Flame for distinction in pursuing the ideals of these current middle ages. They installed Lady Daifa 'A'isha al-Balansiyyahi known as Dovita and Duke Albert von Dreckenveldt as Co-Premiers of the order. The baronial guard was re-populated and new court positions were created in the form of the Baronial Defender for fencing, the Captain of the Flight for combat archery, and the Ranger of the Flight for IKAC archery. Their court herald, Lord Knut the Inflammable, again took up the office of Scalene Pursuivant and began the Dragonsspine Heraldic Guild (DHG). Within two months, the DHG became the largest and most active heraldic company in the kingdom. The Brewing and Vintning Guild headed by, Lord Stefan of Scurlockton and Lady Serena Ravensworth, grew to roughly ten regular members and began work on the Baronial wine. The Baronial Dance Guild, headed by Master Kay Delafleur, prospered and grew. The support and guidance of Their Excellencies have allowed all of the guilds of the barony to become vigorous and successful.

Baron Dane and Baroness Brilliana currently lead the barony in it's new age of prosperity. Through Their Excellencies indulgence this history has been written to provide a basis for teaching what was virtually lost to Their people. Dragonsspine stands in a time of rebirth. Many of those who had left are returning. Those who have joined the barony are learning of their ancestors in this noble barony. Pride, in the bloodlines of the barony and the kingdoms which gave her life, has begun to return. Peace will continue to reign within the barony. All of those who have worked for so many years to create and nurture this group will allow nothing less.

New to this barony is the incipient shire of Hawksburn. The incipient shire is forming around the city of Lamar and the surrounding towns in the southeastern corner of Colorado. Although the group is just beginning, they show promise of becoming a fine, strong group. Leading this incipient shire is Ulf Rungrim with the support of a fine group of people.

This tale of Dragonsspine's history ends at the beginning of Hawksburn's history and at the first anniversary of Dane and Brilliana's reign. There could not be enough space to acknowledge all of the gentles who have been a part of Dragonsspine's history in such a modest work. To those who are not included in this tale, know that your contributions are valuable and are remembered.

Thus stands the history of Dragonsspine from her earliest times to the present day. May all who read this history know of the glory of Dragonsspine and her people. From ancient times, her borders have stretched from the Kansas border in the east, to the Colorado Divide in the west, and from the city of Castle Rock in the north, to the New Mexico border in the south, making a detour around the noble Shire of Aarquelle. She hosts an incipient shire and three mountain passes. Her prominence and grandeur are everlasting. Long Live the Barony of Dragonsspine, all who have served her and all who will follow! Long may she flourish.

History Part Two

Five years have passed since the completion of this history. As with all fairy tales, this too ended. Baron Dane and Baroness Brilliana parted company after two years of leading the barony. Baroness Brilliana left the barony in Baron Dane's hands in the summer of Anno Societas XXX, being 1995 Gregorian. Without the light of our gentle lady, much began to dim, but not to return to the dark days. Baron Dane ruled with a strong hand over his people for three more years before passing it to his successors. He left a stronger barony filled with the martial arts of combat, rapier, and archery, as well as the gentler arts of dancing, cooking, sewing, and calligraphy. New people came to this group and others left. But the legacy of Baron Dane and Baroness Brilliana was a group determined not to be torn asunder by the trials of civilization and ambitions. They gave us the vision of a group which worked as a whole for a common goal and demonstrated the ability to make it a reality.

In June of Anno Societas XXXIII, being 1998 Gregorian, Baron Dane passed the barony into the keeping of Giovanni di Sienna and Cainnleach Uiseir of Glendalough. Though neither of these gentles had lived in the barony beyond a year, they brought experiences from other areas to lead us. Baron Giovanni and Baroness Cainnleach created two new awards, The Baron's Chalice of Merit and The Baroness' Degree of Excellence, to recognize personal service to the baron and baroness. They saw to the rechartering of the award for archery to give it equal precedence with the Dragon's Grace and the Dragon's Claw. While the golden age has departed, their leadership continues to provide a bond among the people.

Tygre's Keep continues to prosper and a new college, Venerable Bede, has gained incipient status at Colorado University - The Springs. Hawksburn has experienced many growing pains and still strives toward becoming an incipient group. More will be written later in the pages of this history...
