The Human Body: Learning About Germs and Staying Healthy

Welcome student scientists! This book invites you to learn about how viruses and bacteria can affect you. It is also about how your body defends itself against infection and how you can stay healthy. You navigate (move through) this book by clicking on the chapter links to the left side of each page.

Here are the learning goals for you as you read:

  • Begin your understanding of viruses, bacteria and fungi.

  • Gain an understanding of the benefits and harms of bacteria.

  • Recognize that the body has defense systems against germs.

  • Develop your ideas for healthy living.

Here is what you will do as you read this book:

  • List the proper manners to reduce the risk of spreading or catching colds and flu.

  • Identify how germs are transferred from one body to another and the prevention methods that can be taken.

  • Talk to your classmates and parents about what you are learning.

  • Ask your teacher questions about what you don’t understand.

  • Create a list of healthy habits to share with the rest of the school.

  • Create a story with the main characters of Mr. Virus, Ms. Bacteria, and Susie the Fungus. Explain in your story what it means to be a virus, a bacteria and a fungus.

  • Where are germs found?

  • What causes germs?

  • How do germs make us sick?

  • How does the immune system respond to germs?

  • How do germs spread?

  • What is a vaccine?

While you can maximize each video to see a full screen, you are not to go to the YouTube web site. Also, remember that you are always to have an adult with you when you are on the Internet.
