To link in with our reading book, Oliver Twist, we are going to be looking at the Victorians and how they lived.

Who were the Victorians?

The Victorian age in British history is named after Queen Victoria, who was Britain's queen from 1837 until 1901.

Many children went to work, not to school. Welcome to the Victorian world. It's time to find out how children lived more than a hundred years ago.

What was wrong with the working conditions for children during the Victorian times?

    • Children worked very long hours with little breaks and no fresh air.

    • They often worked in very dangerous conditions resulting in injuries or even death.

    • Very young children were expected to work

    • There was no education for the poor, so it was very unlikely they could get better paid jobs when they were older.

    • Children were paid very little because they were younger

Charles Dickens wanted to show the hard life that poor children had through his stories. His most famous story is Oliver Twist but he has written many more.
