Burbage Funeral Home – The Early Years

Dedicated to the memory of Marianne “Anna” Adkins Burbage. The Burbage Funeral Home has been serving Worcester County since 1810 in Berlin, Maryland. After Marianne's husband John W. Burbage died in 1944, she managed the funeral home by herself. She died in 1985 at the age of 92. Anna's grandson, Mr. Kirk Burbage, has expanded the business to the town of Snow Hill. Our gratitude to Mr. Burbage for allowing us to use his grandmother's hand-written journal records of birth and death dates. We hope to continue this work of transcription through the 1900s and, hopefully, “The Later Years”. This edition, published in November, 2010, is 127 pages.

Graveyards and Gravestones of Wicomico

Wicomico County was formed in 1867 from parts of Somerset and Worcester Counties. The area has hundreds of small family and church graveyards, many of which are now in an appalling state of disrepair. Mr. Jacob visited and recorded over 600 Wicomico graveyards, and his book ensures that the record of these peoples' graves will not disappear. The earliest gravestone in Wicomico County marked by a still-readable inscription is from 1739, and few of the thousands of wooden markers erected exist today. Stones that mark deaths before 1800 are rare. Published in 1971, the 132-page book lists graves with death dates up to December 31, 1900.

A Somerset Sampler

This is a collection of information on families of Old Somerset County, Maryland, modeled on and supplementing the genealogical notes that Clayton Torrence included in his 1935 history, Old Somerset on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Torrence's book generally covered up to about 1700. This book picks up there and traces the families to the generation of children, the oldest of whom were born by 1776. 312 pages, published by LDGS in 1994 with the assistance of a grant from the Fair Play Foundation of Wilmington, Delaware.
