Kindergarten » Geometry » Identify and describe shapes. » 3 >> Identify shapes as two-dimensional (lying in a plane, “flat”) or three-dimensional (“solid”).
Grade 2 » Geometry » Reason with shapes and their attributes. » 1 >> Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.
This children's book identifies different geometric solids (cubes, spheres, cylinders, triangular prisms, etc..) and addresses the concept of faces on solid shapes. Within the first few pages the children find a note which says, "There are many faces inside this pyramid that can guide you to me, follow them" (Neuschwander). The children in this book quickly realize that the note is referring to faces on solid shapes, not actual faces of people/mummies. Once realizing this, the children embark on their adventure, correctly identifying the number of faces on different solids until they reach the final clue, finding the pharoah's golden burial mask.
Before reading this book children should have a base understanding of geometric solids and what makes up the faces of a geometric solid. Students who have this foundational understanding will be able to engage with this text in an educational way by correctly identifying the number of faces on each solid themselves, seeing if they would be able to make it to the mummies mask on their own if they were the ones embarking on the adventure.
