May 2023: EUROSYNG kick-off
On May 8, 2023, we had a virtual kick-off meeting for EUROSYNG, a newly started Biodiversa+ project (3 year funding, Swedish part is funded by Formas). In this ambitious collaborative project, chaired by Portugal and with teams from Azores, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Germany and Sweden, we will focus on 18 species of Syngathidae (pipefishes and seahorses), with the aim to rescue several of them from their current status of data deficiency (DD) in the IUCN red list. Collected data will focus on population genetics, genomics, morphometrics and habitat descriptions, at a large number of sites across Europe.
The Swedish team will collect fish from 1-2 sites per country in Norway, Sweden and Finland during the summer 2023. The team consists of Gunilla Rosenqvist (team leader, Uppsala University), Charlotta Kvarnemo (side-kick, University of Gothenburg), Sara Kurland (post doc, Uppsala University) and Beatriz Taboada (Master student, University of Gothenburg).

The certificate below looks like Charlotta Kvarnemo was the sole author, but obviously all of us worked together on the paper.
Deadline 28 March 2022. Start: 1 September 2022 (or earlier, as agreed upon).
The position is in the subject of animal ecology, with a focus on evolutionary behavioral ecology. The research questions concern how a recently published definition of sexual selection affect the demarcation between natural and sexual selection, with a special focus on female mating competition, as well as evolution of female ornaments. Some sub-studies are planned to be conducted in collaboration with researchers at the Univ of Western Australia, Australia, potentially also at the Univ of Idaho, USA. The aim of the project is to empirically explore the above-mentioned questions, experimentally and in comparative studies. Tasks and techniques include field collection and experimental work with insects (Kawanaphila nartee), possibly also with fish (Pomatoschistus minutus). Literature studies are also included, where the data will be analyzed with meta-analytical techniques. Phylogenetic analysis may also be considered. A time period of 1-2 months per year will be spent in Western Australia. A shorter visit to Idaho may also be included in the project. In addition to experimental design, data collection and analysis, the writing of scientific articles is a very important task.
NB This position is now filled.

26 October 2016 - Round gobies in the highest salinity so far
Round gobies have been found in the brackish waters of Gothenburg harbour since 2010. However now Leon Green (PhD student), Felix Örn Englund and Andrew Holmes (Master students) have caught around 30 round gobies in 25-29 ppt. The site of capture is close to the open sea. This is the highest salinity round gobies have been found in so far in this area. Given that much of the Swedish west coast shows similar salinity, it indicates a real risk that they will spread further along the coast.
