Welcome to our group's website. Our group has recently moved to the University of Edinburgh. We are interested in Multiscale Fluid Mechanics, Soft Matter and Biophysics. Our work is interdisciplinary, lying at the interface between Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology. • 1/5/2026: Welcome to Dr Mouad Boudina and Dr Haolin Yang. Mouad and Haolin are new PDRAs in the group.

• 30/4/2026: Our paper on "Understanding the Dynamics of Evaporation-Driven Colloidal Self-Assembly" has just been accepted by Newton. Well done Junyu, Abhinav, and Xitong.

• 20-24/4/2026: Halim, Junyu and Sheng went to the SUM4Products study group.

• 15/4/2026: Ke's paper on Droplet Removal by Capillary Lifting is accepted in Communications Physics. This is joint work with Kislon Voitchovsky, Jack Panter, Alvin Shek and Yonas Gizaw. 

• 13-15/4/2026: Halim visited Minghan Hu and gave an invited seminar at ETH Zürich.

• 11/4/2026: Seamus Lilley won Best Presented Poster at our School of Engineering Postgrad Day.

• 16-20/2/2026: Halim attended and gave an invited talk at the workshop "From Adaptive to Active Wetting Dynamics" in Dresden.

• 14/2/2026: We are sad that Dr Xitong Zhang has finished his PDRA in the group funded by Leverhulme Trust. Good luck Xitong for your next academic endeavours.

• 4/2/2026: Halim is a Co-I on a new STFC grant Africa-UK Physics Partnership Collaborative Projects 2025 : Soft Matter Physics approach to tuning soil acidity in sub-Saharan Africa. This is a collaboration with colleagues at Durham University, Stellenbosch University, University of Embu, and Dedan Kimathi University of Technology.

• 22-23/1/2026: Dr Rob Style from ETH Zürich visited and gave an IMT Seminar. 

• 11-12/12/2025: Halim attended and co-organised the 1st UK Biomolecular Condensates Sympsium in Sheffield. Thomas Williamson won the Best Talk Prize. 

• 1-3/12/2025: Prof Jens Harting from Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energy is visiting Edinburgh. Jens is giving an IMT seminar.

• 18-20/11/2025: Prof Andreas Carlson from the University of Oslo is visiting the group. Andreas is giving the Edinburgh Fluid Dynamics Group Symposium.

• 13-14/11/2025: We are launching the EPSRC SUM4Products Network Plus. 

• 13/11/2025: Good things come in threes! Three papers published in close succession. First, a joint work with Hanumantha Rao Vutukuri's group at Twente on From Shallow to Full Wrapping: Geometry and Deformability Dictate Lipid Vesicle Internalization published in Nano Letters. Second, a paper with long-term collaborator Sushma Grellscheid's group in Bergen on Non-invasive Measurement of Biomolecular Condensate Interfacial Tension and Bending Rigidity in Cell Reports Methods. Third, a paper with Teng Zhang at Syracuse and Xueju Wang at Connecticut on Magnetically Reconfigurable Multistable Ribbon Arrays for Liquid Manipulation in Device.

• 31/10/2025: Halim gave an invited talk about research funding proposal at the InSPIRE workshop hosted by Edinburgh Napier University. 

• 31/10/2025: Yang Zhang from China University of Petroleum joins the group as a Visiting PhD student funded by China Scholarship Council. Welcome Yang. 

• 27/10/2025: Halim gave an invited seminar at the Lennard-Jones Centre, University of Cambridge.

• 15-16/10/2025: Halim visited Computational Biology Unit at the University of Bergen and gave an invited seminar.

• 29/9-3/10/2025: Halim attends the International Soft Matter Conference 2025 in Crete and gave a contributed talk. Halim also co-organised the session on "Session Interfaces, Surfaces, Membranes, Emulsions"

• 19/9/2025: Halim gave an invited online seminar for the Department of Geophysics, Universitas Padjajaran.

• 19/9/2025: We publish a paper on Science Advances entitled Multiple Equilibria Enables Tuning Wetting of Droplets on Patterned Liquid Surfaces in collaboration with the groups of Rodrigo Ledesma, Glen McHale, and Gary Wells.

• 8-19/9/2025: Xuemeng Chen from Rosalind Franklin Institute (Karina Pombo Garcia's Group) is visiting the group for 2 weeks. 

• 3-5/9/2025: Halim & Abhinav Naga organised the Special Sessions on Wetting on Bio-Inspired and Smart Surfaces as part of MNF 2025 at the University of Edinburgh.

• 2-4/9/2025: Halim gave a plenary talk at UK Fluids Conference 2025 at the University of Liverpool.
