Understanding Anemia
SYSMPTOMS OF ANEMIA
The underlying causes and severity, as well as, underlying health problems will cause a variety of symptoms. The body will compensate for early anemia, and if left untreated for long periods of time symptoms may not be noticeable. The following symptoms are common to many forms of anemia:
Easy fatigue and loss of energy
Unusually rapid heart beat, particularly with exercise
Shortness of breath and headache, particularly with exercise
Difficulty concentrating
Dizziness
Pale skin
Leg cramps
Insomnia
Iron Deficiency - Anemia casued by Iron Deficiency may experience these symptoms:
Hunger for ice, or dirt (a condition called pica)
Curvature of the nails (koilonychias)
Soreness of the mouth, cracks at corners of mouth
Iron Deficiency anemia occurs when your body doesn't have enough iron.
 Vitamin B12 Deficiency - People whose anemia is caused by a deficiency of Vitamin B12 may have these symptoms:
A tingling, "pins and needles" sensation in the hands or feet
Lost sense of touch
A wobbly gait and difficulty walking
Clumsiness and stiffness of the arms and legs
Dementia
Hallucinations, paranoia, and schizophrenia
Chronic Lead Poisoning - Chronic lead poisoning may lead to these symptoms:
A blue-black line on gums (referred to as lead line)
Abdominal pain
Constipation
Vomiting
