PIRATE OMNIBUS DVDs

The Chinese PIrate Omnibus DVD !!

This page is devoted to the uniquely Chinese, multi-movie pirate DVD omnibus releases. These alluring releases, sold by street side vendors or in portable street side shops in China, come with one, two or three factory-produced DVDs inside an over sized 5.5" x 10" inch slipcase, which are of surprising quality and design. These omnibus releases are sold flat inside a plastic bag with no clam shell sleeve or clam shell case - if clam shell cases are even made in such dimensions.

These omnibus DVDs are generally done in mpeg-4 and a quality ranges from VCD level to that of an average budget DVD; the quality of which is great on a laptop.  The DVDs have rudimentary on-screen menus to select titles (under their Chinese titles), but no English subs available and no options or special features.

Actually, these omnibus giants are a quite a good idea. In a country over run with low income households, these 20-programs-in-one DVDs are a cheap way for the no-budget shopper to see everything from entire Chinese TV series's  to a month's rental of Hollywood movies all for the price of about $5.00.

Naturally, being a Korean horror geek, I collect such digital curio items, if for nothing else, than the colorful packaging. So here is my collection thus far.

This omnibus comes with 27 Korean horror films crushed down onto one DVD.

The films are laid onto the DVD in Part A and Part B selections. The omnibus does have a few Thai films too.

This Thai and Korean horror omnibus, entitled "The Greatly Thailad Terrible Movie Serieses" comes with 12 films on two DVDs.

The titles on the front are embossed.

This gate fold slipcase boasting an Asian horror collection, shows you the titles right on the back of the box in thumb nail photos.

There are two DVDs - shown in the scan. Not sure about the decorative thumbnail collages on the inside cover, though. Decoration, perhaps?

This nicely designed omnibus features the Cinderella artwork and 16 Korean suspensers compacted onto two DVDs. Like the above omnibus, the titles are conveniently shown on the back of the box.

Another double-disc omnibus using the Cinderella artwork on the cover and one the discs despite the film NOT EVEN being included in the two-DVD movie selection.

This recent addition, entitled " Sout Korea 10 Horror Movie" actually has more than 10 movies on it. Two DVDs, titles in thumbnails on the back. And once again, the cover image (APT) is not included on the list.

This gate fold omnibus uses the rarely seen alternate Korean artwork for RED SHOES; artwork that was used on the Red Shoes theatrical posters in Thailand (notice the Thai lettering above the title).

With this two-disc omnibus you get the titles seen in thumbnails on the back.

This 13-film gate fold omnibus comes with a mixed bag of Asian horrors, from Chinese to Thai to Korean. Once again, the 13 thumb nails on the inside cover tell you what films you are getting, while the inside panels and DVD picture discs are merely decorative.oOnce again

This gate fold omnibus , entitled "TOP 20 HORROR MOVIE" comes with 3 DVDs. Alas, there are not 20 horror films; there are only 14.

Disc One:  Shutter,  Letters of Death,  The Victim,  ??? Thai film,  The Dorm,  Lizard Woman,  The Unborn

Disc Two:  Art of the Devil 2,  Art of the Devil 1,  ???? Thai horror,  Invisible Waves,  Silk,  Guinea Pig 1

Disc Three:  Mae Nak

This one-DVD disc omnibus came in a standard sized slipcase - no sleeve - no clam shell.

There are a whooping 33 mpeg-4 Korean horror movies on this disc; virtually everything pre-2007.

The quality is pretty low, but at least on a laptop it comes off as VCD quality... providing you don't push it to "full screen". LOL
