February 2013

Knox Creek Heritage Center is in its 18th year and the board hopes that you will continue to support the center by renewing your membership at this time if you have not already done so.

Activities and Accomplishments for 2012:

February 2012: A trunk show of items that were used in the homes of early settlers was presented to a Girl Scout group. The trunk was filled with items that the children could handle.

March 2012 (St. Urho / St. Patrick's Day Program): Scott and Meredith Hueckmann appraised items that were brought to the event. It was our own Heritage Center Antiques Road Show. Because of the loss of our dear friend Deon, Terry Wasti took on the position of treasurer.

May 2012: The museum opened for a state-wide Museum's Week. The Prentice High School Community Service students, along with their teachers, Mrs. Mayer and Ms. Cress, helped get the buildings ready for opening. The biggest job was reorganizing the pole building to make room for additional displays.

June 2012: (Midsummer Celebration) Finnish Folk Dancers Eero and Rosann Angeli presented a program and taught some dances.

August 2012: We gathered an assortment of artifacts and presented a "Trunk Show" at Golden Age Nursing Home in Tomahawk.

September 2012: The annual Meeting (Country Afternoon) was held before the activities of the Country Afternoon. A discussion was held about the need for a new roof on the Main House. Phyllis (Komula) Koppa donated her mother's nursing uniforms and a history of her nursing career. Quan Bahn, the science teacher at Prentice came to check out what could be done with the garden on the west side of the Main House. He will work with a few of his students to establish a natural area of native plants.

December 2012: 2,227 volunteer hours were logged in with work at the museum and at out events. A big Thank You for all the help.

Looking forward to 2013:

  • Our St. Patrick's/St. Urho's program will feature a Heritage Center Antiques Road Show. You are encouraged to bring one or two small items. Scott and Meredith Hueckmann will again do appraisals of your items.

  • Friends of Fred Smith will have a History Expo on May 17-18. Local History Societies will have exhibits for their collections. Call 715-339-7282 for more info.

  • We have several up-keep projects that we have to undertake. We are getting estimates for a new roof on the Main House. Our well needs replacing. We have gotten a bid for over $5,000 for a new well. Several of our buildings need painting. We hope our members will consider a special donation for these projects. There is a separate category on the attached membership slip to indicate your donation. Please keep in mind that all donations are tax deductible.

  • We have set aside an area in the church for Reunion Books. If you have family information, we welcome any additions to our collection. In addition, we are planning to set up a small library for people interested in looking at some of the old books we have in our collection. Past editions of the Bee from the 1950's to the present are also available for research and enjoyment.

  • We would like to create a display of family pictures that include early settlers. Please look through those boxes and albums and help us make some "family tree" displays.

  • The museum will be open during the State Historical Society Museum Weekend. Hours will be on Saturday, May 25th from 1 - 4 PM.

  • A new brochure has been developed by Jason Kivela. Pick up a few to pass to friends.

  • The Heritage Center is listed on the Wisconsin State Historical Society and the Price County Web Sites.

We welcome any donations and/or loans that illustrate our long-ago or recent past. We wish to thank those who have donated additional funds, worked at events and otherwise donated their services and expertise to our organization. Thanks also to: the Crazy Hearts Quilters for their donations to our raffle, the businesses that donated items for our Silent Auction, and to the cooks and bakers that furnish food for our events.
