BIOTEKNICA yielded provocative installations and performances that showcased the beauty and complexity of biological systems focusing on irrational specimens. The project also engaged audiences through workshops and academic presentations encouraging a broader understanding of bio-art and its potential applications.
BIOTEKNICA created laboratory environments in the gallery space and designed irrational, grotesque organisms inspired by the Teratoma. Willet and Knight trained in tissue culture and tissue engineering technologies towards the development of tissue culture prototypes and living human tissue sculptures in the gallery space. This included seeking institutional ethics approval at two institutions which were ultimately approved in 2007.
BIOTEKNICA's innovative approach has inspired a new generation of bio-artists, scientists, and thinkers.
BIOTEKNICA adopted a fictitious corporation model, exploring notions of reproduction and self/other distinctions in relation to evolving biotechnologies. The project included:
01.Corporate Interventions and Installations (2002)
02. Laboratory Installations, various (2004 - 2009)
03. Meat Sculptures (2002 - 2007)
04. Public Autopsy Performances (2002 - 2007)
05. Corporate Art for a Corporal Public (2003)
06. Virtual Laboratory Software (2004)
07. Organic Tissue Prototypes (2005)
08. Teratological Prototypes (with Tissue Culture and Art Project) (2006)
09. Workshops: Bio-art workshops and community engagement initiatives (2007)
