Reflection:
Consider the various professional learning environments described in this module. Write a reflection that demonstrates how these weave together to create a successful, ongoing professional learning experience. In your post reflect on:
How does the combination of face to face, blended, and flipped models support a dynamic and productive professional learning experience?
Just as students in our classrooms learn differently, so do our teachers and administrators and rather than forcing them into an environment that is not conducive to their learning strengths, we should always offer multiple avenues for learning. Having the combination of face-to-face, blended, and flipped models provides opportunities for a wide range of activities that might not be available when given only a traditional professional learning environment. Including the blended and flipped models makes the learner more accountable to the material whereas the face-to-face meets the social needs of learning. Social needs can still be met through an online environment, but is more powerful in the face-to-face, both positively and potentially negatively. Combining these professional learning environments allows as to better meet the needs of our learners (teachers and administrators) and provides models of how to blend these experiences.
Why are Professional Learning Networks beneficial?
Professional Learning Networks are beneficial in that they serve as a portal for our own learning. No longer are we restricted to the teacher next door or across the hall or relegated to asking the veteran teacher in the department. Instead, we can pose a question and receive a number of different answers from people just like us, but somewhere else in the world.
For me, developing and leveraging my professional learning network is a goal for this year. I do not fully utilize the vast amount of knowledge available through my networks through engagement. It is not because I do not know how to use the technology, but more about taking the risk of putting myself “out there”. In this area, as well as other areas in my personal life, I am taking on a growth mindset and going to do it - making mistakes, but at least trying.
In what ways can educators continue to grow professionally using self-directed and user-generated learning?
Educators can grow professionally by engaging with their professional learning network. The key is to engage in order to truly find value and grow your knowledge. Simply lurking serves a purpose, but can be too passive to truly create a network. Participating in Twitter chats, doing book studies, attending non-traditional learning events such as Edcamps, CoffeeCUEs, and Unconferences are all ways to force a more active role due to the fact that through participating, you become part of the learning. Taking online courses and certifications, such as this one, increases your skills and your network.
