As a registered nurse it is vital that you reflect on your individual professional progression. When you reflect it allows you to understand where you have professionally excelled at, and where you might need to work on. In return, it will deliver the best patient- centred care. It will also prevent further mistakes. During my studies at The University of New England, I had to reflect a lot on the NMBA competency standards to be able to pass my clinical placements. I have attached below my reflection form a facilitator as well as some competency standards.
NMBA Competency Standards
Standard 1. Thinks Critically and Analyses Nursing Practice
In the role of a health care worker it is vital to assess their practice and provide in-depth thinking within their role to provide a person- centered base and perform well by analyzing their pros and cons and working towards them. While Nurses and Health care workers need to perform their best practice, they still need to follow the legislations throughout the process. This has been represented in my practice of being a nurse through the following point:
1). Assignment in HSNS171: OSCE Vital signs: For this assignment, I was able to perform the practice at a high distinction level. This was shown through the compliance of privacy, when taking note of the patient’s health and not sharing it with anyone. This is an example of the Privacy Act of 1988. However, when performing my Vital check assignment, I complied with the regulations by performing the correct hygiene and analyzing my patient before assessing the basics. When performing the vital signs, I had to critically think of the outcomes and results of my practice. The High distinction represents my understanding of standard 1 of the NMBA Competency Standards.
2.) Clinical Skills Competency Assessment (Appendices, 1,2,3,4,5). The documents supplied represent my ability to perform the skills needed for the basics of a nurse to be developed. The certificates hold my ability accountable of being able to perform the attachments as I took tests to retrieve this. These documents provide my ability towards my assessments and the skills required for being a nurse.
Standard 3: Maintains the capability for practice
Healthcare practices require the upkeep of being educated in their practices as healthcare is always changing. It is important for the workers to maintain their knowledge and adapt to new standards as this will enhance their capability of their job and ensures they follow the regulations that are in place. Nurses should ensure their practice is compliant by using their critical thinking and strategies when performing patient- centered care. As a student nurse I have shown the ability to perform my practice by continuing my learning within my studies an provide the practice needed. This is shown through the appendices that are attached as it shows my improvement an accomplishment so far. However, in HSNS173 assignment – OSCE parenteral medication administration I was able to perform my practice by fulfilling the requirements needed to pass.
Throughout my placements i have received positive feed back and been awarded as satisfactory throughout the placement course.
