I think having clear and concise developmental plans allows to establish personal and professional goals. I do believe that it is essential to be flexible when continuing to progress in your career and understand that changes do happen.
1 year after completing degree:
Specific: One year after completing my nursing degree I hope to be working in a rural hospital. I hope to get the opportunity to work in the Pediatric department of the hospital as I am most interested in this area of nursing.
Measurable: Completing my New Graduate year is essential for me as it will give me experience and opportunities to further my knowledge as a nurse. Through this year I hope to be exposed to further education opportunities and the exposure to the pediatric ward.
Attainable: I will achieve this through communicating with my preceptor and continuing to apply for pediatric nursing positions. I hope to do this in a small hospital, hopefully a rural hospital, so I get the opportunity to have a more wider range of experiences, chances to learn and to help reduce workload stress
Realistic: Creating achievable goals is essential and I feel more than capable to achieve this. Working hard is a must as a first year Rn and I know there will be high expectations to meet which I am dedicated to do as it will help reach my goals.. Self reflection, asking for feedback and being proactive is a pathway I will need to follow to reach my goals.
Timely: I hope to have achieved this goal within my new graduate year. I understand I must work hard to achieve goals.
2 years after completing degree:
Specific: Two years after completing my degree I hope to have had the experience in the pediatric ward and continue to grow there.
Measurable: I hope to achieve this by continuing my growth in knowledge and experience in the Pediatric ward and continually approaching educational activities that are provided within the ward. y
Attainable: To achieve this goal I hope to have worked in the pediatric unit prior and continuing to stay in this ward while completing my second year of RN's. If I wasn't given the chance to be in a Pediatric ward for new grad, I will continue to apply.
Realistic: Achieving this goal will require me to self reflect on the last year of my life and ensure the next path is definitely where i want to go and continue to take opportunities of learning that will enhance my skills.
Timely: Allowing myself to be in this ward for more than a year if i enjoy it will enhance my knowledge and career and provide myself with skills that i can take into my 5 year goal.
5 years after completing degree:
Specific: Five years after completing my degree I hope to have a post graduate program in Neonatal intensive care.
Measurable: I hope to achieve this by doing my postgrad degree externally through the university of New England while working part time in the pediatric department. Once I finish that degree I will put in a resume to start applying for Neonatal intensive care units to hopefully be working for them in the 5 year period.
Attainable: To achieve this goal I hope to have worked in at least the pediatric unit prior to putting in my resume to show I have had experience in hospitals settings.
Realistic: Achieving this goal will require me to self reflect on the past 5 years of my life and ensure the next path is definitely where i want to go and that i have enjoyed my nursing experience so far. I hope what ever team I am apart of in 5 years that I am a valued member.
Timely: Allowing myself five years to obtain this goal, I feel, is an achievable time frame. Although I could reach this goal sooner, I feel I want to have experience in a pediatric ward and possibly others to gain further knowledge to my practice.
