The KHS '64 Legacy Committee has been set up to extend the KHS concession stand at the high school stadium and to honor Coach Joe Kahahawai. The committee consists of Glenn Andresen, Leonard Gonzales, Sandi Johnson, Nelson Markel, Keith McClure, and Bob Richardson. Upon reflecting what made our high school years special, members of the committee attributed it to the culture created by two people, Shigeru Hotoke of the Music Department and Coach Joe Kahahawai from the Athletic Department. Mr. Hotoke's legacy has been honored by the KHS music room being named after him with a plaque recognizing his contributions. The group felt that Coach Kahahawai should also be honored and conceived of the legacy project and met with Ramona Takahashi, KHS's current Athletic Director, who communicated the need to extend the concession area in the KHS stadium. The group formed the KHS '64 Legacy Committee to raise funds to construct the concession stand extension and to install a plaque commemorating Coach Joe Kahahawai.
In the 1964
school year, Coach Kahahawai coached the Surfriders to their very first football Conference Championship (we were undefeated) and in the spring, he was instrumental in coaching the KHS Track team to their first State Championship, the first time in history that a non-Honolulu team won the state title. Joe Kahahawai passed away in 1998, but he is remembered as an outstanding coach/teacher/mentor/role model for many students. As a person, Joe Kahahawai was an inspiration and instilled pride, and the discipline to work hard every day, and most of all, to get the most out of life.
Please consider a donation (anything from $5 to $100 will help). Any leftover funds will be donated to KHS. Checks should be made out to KHS Legacy, and sent to:

Pictured are 3 of the members of the KHS '64 Legacy Committee, from left to right, Glenn Andresen, Bob Richardson, and Keith McClure. This is the plaque that will be installed with the concession stand extension. The hope is that this recognition will affect current students and teachers with a sense of history, legacy, and identity with other alumni.
The KHS '64 Legacy Committee and others were at the dedication ceremony on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at the 2014 KHS Homecoming game.
At the Las Vegas Reunion banquet on October 21, 2014, Nelson Markel, a member of the Legacy Committee made a presentation about the project and collected $750 from classmates present at the banquet. Mahalo!
An additional $200 from leftover funds from the Hawaii reunion was also donated to the project.
