The KHS Class of 1964 has been supporting the awards of at least two scholarships, one to a Waimanalo resident and the other to a Kailua resident that will be awarded annually. To support these scholarships, in 2017 we established the Hana Hou Hui (One More Time Club or Encore Club) whereby classmates have pledged to make a yearly donation of $50 or more for five years. A reminder was sent out to HHH members to send in checks for the coming year on October 31st so we would know how many scholarships and what amounts we would offer at the May Awards Ceremony at KHS. Due to the generosity of many members of the class, we collected enough funds to support many more than two scholarships. However, as of June 2021, we will no longer be soliciting funds for the scholarships but will use whatever is in the scholarship fund for a final round of KHS scholarship awards in 2022. In 2022 we decided to solicit funds for another year of scholarships in 2023. This resulted in an overwhelming amount from generous members of the Class of 1964 that we will be able to fund a final year of scholarships in 2024 without soliciting additional funds.
Tax deductible scholarship support checks should be made payable and sent to:
Friends of Kailua

Kailua, HI 96734
Please indicate on your check that it is for the "Class of 1964 Scholarship".
This year, we opened up the scholarship donations to classmates other than those in the Hana Hou Hui, that had pledged to donate funds for 5 years. Wereceived an overwhelming amount of donations totaling $26,000. As a result, we were able to fund seven $2000 scholarships, including the Haywood Kalima Memorial Scholarship. The remaining funds will be used to fund our last year of scholarships without the need to solicit additional funds.
The 2023 KHS Class of 1964 Scholarships were awarded to Ashlyn Tai (Haywood Kalima Memorial Award), Margaret Rose Agcaoili, Abigail Dumlao Bolo, Malia Forness, Alicia Kaita, Steven Inouye, and Jacob Su'a Tisdale.
The scholarship awardees submitted video "thank you's" to the class, which can be viewed below or watched on YouTube.
Last year was to be our 5th and final year for offering our KHS Class of 1964 Scholarships. However, so few students applied so we decided to offer a final round of scholarships in 2022. We awarded five scholarships ranging from $500 to $1400 to use up our remaining scholarship funds. The five recipients were, Kai Kaneko, Hunter Ryman, Jaren Shimoko, Madeline Tamura, and Precious Wilson. Four members of the Scholarship Committee, Irene Mackenzie Chung, Lena Waki Kanemori, Joyce Ono McCaman, and Joanne Katsuyama Swearingen, met on the KHS campus to review the applications and attended the Awards Ceremony on May 7, 2022 to present the scholarships to the awardees.
We asked each of the students to submit a video of their thank you's to our class and the video below was created to capture their messages. The Scholarship Committee was so impressed by these students that we decided to solicit funds from our class for scholarship awards in 2023. An email was sent to class members to submit a minimum of $20 to the Friends of Kailua (see information above) by July 31, 2022.

This was to be our 5th and final year for offering our KHS Class of 1964 Scholarships. However, this entire school year was virtual, due to the pandemic, and very few students submitted applications for our scholarships. As a result, we offered 4 scholarships of $1000 each, instead of the seven that we had funds for. The Scholarship Committee again met virtually and submitted a video of our awards to be included in the Kailua High School Academic Awards Ceremony for 2021. This year, we included our four recipients, Bryce Jones, Vincent Luu, Ashlyn Nakashima, and Xyra Villanueva, in our virtual awards ceremony. The Scholarship Committee decided to offer our scholarships for another year but we will no longer request additional funds from the Hana Hou Hui members. Thank you for your support these past 5 years!
This was the year of the pandemic and all graduation ceremonies were virtual. The Scholarship Committee met virtually and submitted a video of our awards to the recipients of the 2020 scholarships. The Class of '64 was able to award seven $1000 scholarships, thanks to the generous donations of class members.

Joseph Hernandez was awarded the scholarship for a Waimanalo resident, and Conor Lyden and Kaho'opomaika'i Kekua were awarded the other two Class of '64 scholarships. Aloha,
It’s been awhile since I have contacted you. I just completed my first year of college at Kapiolani Community College and it was overall a fantastic experience. I learned a lot of new material everyday and loved every minute of it. Currently it is Summer break. I am spending my summer working a few jobs, helping to welcome incoming students through our STEM Summer Bridge, and bonding with my family (including my new nephew). Thank you so much for your support. How are you all doing? I hope you are all well.
Mahalo,
Kayla M. Clarke
On May 17th, 2017, three $500 scholarships were awarded. A generous donation was made by a classmate to honor the memory of Chris Uchibori, who passed away unexpectedly on April 2, 2017. Lena Waki Kanemori presented this award to Kayla Clarke at the Awards Ceremony. Chris Croft wrote a tribute to Chris Uchibori, which was read by Joanne Katsuyama Swearingen, because he was unable to get to Hawaii in time for the ceremony.
This is an excerpt from the tribute: "Chris found his passion in music, and shared it with all his many students in Redding, California, where he lived and taught for so many years. Like so many in our class, and on the scholarship committee, Chris became a teacher, which is a tribute in itself to the many wonderful teachers we learned from at KHS. Chris' enthusiasm was infectious, especially when he had a musical instrument in his hands." For additional information about Chris Uchibori's productive life, click HERE.
Angelika Rodriguez was awarded the scholarship for a Waimanalo resident by Ron Shima, whose family has run Shima's Market in Waimanalo for many decades. The recipient of the other Class of '64 scholarship was Joleen Tangonan, who was unable to attend the ceremony. The 2017 Scholarship Selection Committee consisted of Class President, Chris Croft, Irene MacKenzie Chung, Lena Waki Kanemori, and Joanne Katsuyama Swearingen. Here are some photos taken at the Awards Ceremony.
Ronald Shima presented the KHS Class of ’64 award to a Waimanalo resident, Angelika Rodriquez. The crowed cheered when the owner of the revered Shima’s Store in Waimanalo was introduced.
Lena Waki Kanemori presented the scholarship honoring the memory of Chris Uchibori to Kayla Clarke. Joanne Katsuyama Swearingen read a tribute to Chris Uchibori written by class president, Chris Croft, who was supposed to deliver the tribute but did not make it back from California in time.
