Install a VNC server on the remote computer, and use a VNC client on your computer to control the remote computer.
You install a VNC server on the Person you Care For's (PYCF) computer, and run this as a service, so it's always on. You can then use a VNC client on your computer to control the remote computer.
- Install a VNC server on the PYCF's computer. I use vino, which is (I think), the standard on Gnome. Options available for Windows include TightVNC and RealVNC. Free versions of both are available, but neither include encryption, so be aware of the potential risk. You can pay extra for this from RealVNC, or other options (such as a tunnelled connection over SSH) are possible.
- Configure it:
- Allow the remote user to control the computer.
- Set a password. On vino, I think this is encrypted when sent - but the password is limited to 8 characters, and the encryption algorithm is weak.
Unless you're running over an encrypted connection, don't do anything that might reveal other passwords or sensitive information.
