Most of the software that I needed was already installed:
- vino - a VNC server
- Perl - scripting language
- web browser and office software
I installed some extra packages through the repository:
- mocp - a text-based music player
- xtightvnc - a lightweight VNC client
- feh - a lightweight image viewer
- linphone - VOIP client. One of the limitations of ARM is that Skype have not released binaries for it. (Of course, it's not open source either, so you can't compile your own.) I used linphone, with an Ekiga account, as a free alternative.
I grabbed bashpodder.shell from the Internet, to download podcasts of the news for mum.
