The story of this Kerley family, in large part, parallels the story of the settlement of the American frontier. As Americans continuously pushed to the West across the unexplored continent of North America, they were accompanied - or in some cases led - by members of the Kerley family. Kerleys were among the first explorers of the Carolina backcountry; they participated in the "Great Leap Westward" into Tennessee and Kentucky, they later assisted in the exploration and settlement of the Mid-West, and they helped settle frontier Texas and Missouri. Members of this family have, for almost 400 years, been in the vanguard of the settlement of America.
This family has been characterized by wanderlust. Its members have always been on the go; apparently never content to stay for long in any one part of the country. They exemplify the restlessness and opportunity-seeking that is inherent in the American character. They, like many of their contemporaries, constantly searched for that "greener grass" on the other side of the fence.
Life on the frontier was dangerous. Members of this family were continually involved in battles and other unpleasant encounters with Indians. Kerleys fought Indians just about everywhere: in Massachusetts, in South Carolina, in Tennessee, in Florida. This battling spirit also propelled numerous family members to take arms in defense of their country. Virtually no major (or even minor) conflict involving the troops of this country over the past 360 years has passed without Kerley involvement.
The first generation was the original immigrants to this country. In the late 1740's or early 1750's a group of Kerleys left Northern Ireland and immigrated to America. They were Presbyterians, and they first touched soil in America in Baltimore. Like many other immigrants of that era, this family traveled from Baltimore down the King's Highway and the Fall Line Road searching for that "ideal" spot. Our family settled in South Carolina on a place called Halfway Swamp (which is today near the town of Rimini, South Carolina). The patriarch of this group was William Kerley, and the matriarch of this group was Dorothy Kerley. William and Dorothy stayed in South Carolina for their entire lives, farming and raising their family.
The second generation was the four known children of William and Dorothy: Joseph, Henry, John and George. (It is certainly possible that William and Dorothy also had one or more daughters, but there is no surviving evidence of that). I believe that all four of these boys were born in Northern Ireland and were brought to America by their parents. These four boys remained on the family farm near Rimini, South Carolina for about 25 years living the hard, but relatively uneventful, lives of farmers on the American frontier.
The start of the American Revolution in the mid-1770's, however, had a major impact on that Kerley settlement in South Carolina. In fact, the War split the Kerley family into two, opposing camps. As the war commenced, the four boys were all in their mid-40's and had been living in their new country for over two decades. Two of the boys (Joseph and George) apparently remained closely attached to Great Britain. In fact, George served in the British army. (He was the only one of the four boys that has documented military service during the War). The greater Rimini area was largely Loyalist, and this apparently made the other two boys (John and Henry) uncomfortable. These two boys apparently sided with the American/Patriot cause. So, after the War had been under way for a few years, they decided to move to a less pro-British area of the county. In the late 1770 's or early 1780's John and Henry moved most of their families to Albemarle, Virginia, where some of their children fought on the Patriot side during the War. (In applying for his land in Virginia, John had a connection with Thomas Jefferson).
The other two boys, Joseph and George, (and one of their nephews (Henry's son, William)) stayed in South Carolina throughout the War. So, as the War came to an end in the early 1780's, the Kerleys were split. Two family groups resided in Albemarle, Virginia, (John and Henry) and three family groups resided in South Carolina (Joseph, George and William).
The third generation was the children of the four boys. These children were the first Kerleys of this line to be born in America. Most of these children moved away from the places where their parents lived, and they began the Kerley movement to the West. Beginning in the late 1780's up through the early 1800's this family dispersed all over the frontier. One of Joseph's sons (Josiah) moved south-west to Monroe County, Alabama, while Joseph's other sons stayed in South Carolina. John's sons, (William and John Jr.) moved to central Kentucky. Henry's sons moved to Macon/Sumner/Smith counties in central Tennessee (William), Burke County, North Carolina (Henry Jr), and Cumberland County, Tennessee (James). So, as the 19th century began, there were clusters of Kerleys living not only in South Carolina and Virginia, but also in four states: Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina. And, for the most part, these Kerleys were very prolific. Many of them had very large families.
The fourth generation encompassed several dozen Kerley families. The members of these families shared many similar names (on both the male and female sides), so keeping track of them is quite challenging. Some of these families stayed right where their parents had lived. But, many of these families packed up and pushed even further westward. Hardy individuals from this generation moved to Arkansas, western Tennessee, Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Mississippi and Texas. These explorers and settlers were often among the pioneers settling a new county or town.
This group was the second generation to be born on American soil. They were all born either during or shortly after the Revolutionary War. So, when the War of 1812 started, many members of this generation volunteered to fight on behalf of the Americans. Wherever they were, the young men from this generation took up arms on behalf of their country. At least 8 members of this generation served in this War: two served in Kentucky (Captain William and his son John), two served in South Carolina (private Arthur and his brother private John), and four served in Tennessee (Lieutenant William, Sergeant James, Private Henry, and Private Daniel). (Lieutenant William, by the way, had a very memorable confrontation with Andrew Jackson during this War). It is possible that more members of this generation served in this War, but I have not been able to tie the service records of these Kerleys to any specific members of our family.
The fifth generation includes several hundred Kerleys. They, too, often pushed out West. Listing the known members of the fifth generation is as far as I intend to trace this family tree. I am confident that any serious person researching his or her Kerley roots should be able to track their ancestors down to the late 1800's. If you can do that, you should be able to tie your ancestor into one of the lines discussed in here. If you make it this far, welcome to your newly-expanded Kerley family history.
The first five generations of my particular clan in America are set out in the outline below. First and second generations are listed in Bold Black. The third generation is listed in Red. The fourth generation is listed in Blue. The fifth generation is listed in Purple.
