Natural Edges

Added 19 June 2014

Above is the Cherry Burr referred to in the text below that has been drying for about 6 months in a paper bag with a coating of End-Seal. I have made it into a fly tying caddy with a largest dimension of about 12 inches.

The cups, tool holders and line bobbin holders are made from Ebony and finished in melamine. The Cherry is finished with two coats of Chestnut finishing oil...

... and this is the caddy in use.

This is a Fly Tying Caddy (9” across, 5/8” thick), made from a Walnut log offcut that looked as though it might suit. I allowed it to stabilize a bit and secured the bark with Titebond 2 and medium CA before turning, and I am hoping it will not fly apart as it dries. Time will tell. The supports are for a Matarelli style whip finisher and the base has 3 small Ebony feet to allow for warping. I am not a Fly Fisherman, but I have a friend who is and this is a layout and process prototype for a Cherry Burr that is drying out for turning sometime next year.
