- Magician is portable. You can, for example, copy it to a USB stick and launch Magician from there. Magician will not make modifications outside its installation directory (e.g. it does not use Windows' registry).
- Magician is crash proof. All the modifications made to lists and decks are backed up to the hard disk in real time. This means that if a power failure strikes while your are cataloguing cards, you can continue from the same point before the power failure occurred.
- You can catalogue cards by using the keyboard only. It's a much faster way than by using the mouse. When adding cards to a deck, the mouse is sometimes handier. However, when you know exactly which card you want to add to the deck, use the keyboard.
- The search capabilities of Magician are very comprehensive. There is a base filter that can be used to filter out unwanted cards, in addition to the normal color and card type filters.
- The base filter window has a list of all the card abilities (e.g. haste and trample). You can easily pick up the abilities that cards must have and/or must not have. Even special abilities such as cantrips and mana producers are listed.
- You can even write your own filters in a text format to create more complex filters. (And because they are in a text format, you can, for example, e-mail them to your friends easily.)
- Base filters can be saved and loaded, in case you like to use them later.
- There are also 10 slots where base filters can be stored to. For example, Ctrl + Shift + 1 saves the current base filter to the slot 1, and Ctrl + 1 loads the filter from it.
- You can switch between original card fields (as they appear in the cards) and erratated card fields on the fly (just press Alt + F1). Of course, when building a deck, erratated card fields are useful. Note that original fields are used by default.
- The reminder texts can be hidden (and shown) at any time. For example, "Bushido 1." is showed instead of "Bushido 1. (When this blocks or becomes blocked, it gets +1/+1 until end of turn.)". This makes card texts shorter and easier to read when you are familiar with the card abilities. (Ctrl + F1 turns the reminder texts on/off in the card info view, Ctrl + F2 does the same in the list views.)
- Card rulings are included. Just middle click a card to open a card rulings window. Also, general game rulings are shown when requested. You can update the rulings by yourself: simply replace the corresponding rulings file.
- You can view which deck formats (e.g. Vintage, Ravnica Block, etc.) are valid for your deck. Also, you'll see why a format is not valid. You can also create new deck formats (and update the old ones), if necessary.
- Lists and decks have a history of added/removed cards. For example, after you have added cards of a booster pack, you can later view what cards the booster contained (and create a new card list containing the cards). You can even create snapshots from given points in the history.
- Magician shows comprehensive card probabilities. For example, there are 10 creature cards in a deck. You can easily see what is the probability of getting at least one of them when 7 cards are drawn from the deck. Or, what's the probability of getting at least two of them when 15 cards are drawn from the deck.
- The card probability window even shows the probabilities of getting lands and other mana producers (for each color used in the deck).
- You can also view statistics of lists, decks, and the database. For example, you can see how many rare cards you have, and what's their total price.
- Sideboards are supported.
- You can import decks from Magic Workstation and Apprentice, and export decks to them.
- You can import your own cardsets from Magic Set Editor and and Magic Set Editor 2. (There are some limitations concerning special features, though.)
- You can use an utility program, DeckSync, to export all your Magician decks to Magic Workstation and/or Apprentice with a single click of your mouse. You can also press Ctrl + F12 in Magician to quickly launch DeckSync to update your Magician decks in Magic Workstation and/or Apprentice.
- DeckSync is also capable of launching different applications. Use it to launch Magic Workstation and/or Apprentice, and your decks will always be up to date when you start playing.
- Foil cards and special mana symbols are supported.
- Magician contains cards from Alpha to the newest expansion set, including Vanguard and several box sets. Special, rare cardsets are not included, but you can import them to Magician by yourself if needed.
- You can disable cardsets so that they won't show up in Magician. For example, you can hide all but the cardsets of Kamigawa block from the deck views when building a deck for that block.
- There are no limitations how long the database fields can be. For example, if the name of a card is 200 characters long, then it is—no clipping will occur.
- The card database is checked for correctness.
- Lists and decks are saved as plain text files. This makes them easy to be utilized in some other applications (of yours).
- The sizes of fonts can easily be scaled up or down to suit your likings and the used screen resolution.
- You can create (basic) themes for Magician. Any color, icon, and/or font can be changed.
