The art of ethical taxidermy

One of our recent projects uses ethical taxidermy (making use of animals found dead) to highlight pressures faced by seabirds in their natural environments. So far these specimens have appeared at school visits, the People's Museum in Limerick, Connemara Science Week, Galway Science and Technology Festival and Kerry Community College. The project was led by Dr Katie O'Dwyer and it was completed in collaboration with researchers Dr Ian O'Connor, Dr Heidi Acampora, Dr Andrew Power, taxidermist Donal Mulcahy of Glenameade Taxidermy and artist Sabine Springer. Funding was provided by the Irish Research Council.

We are now expanding our ethical taxidermy project to share other stories of pressures faced by a variety of different wildlife. It is now the WARPPEd project - Wildlife Art Representing Pressures and Providing Education - and you can find out more on the WARPPEd website.
