Data, Information and Knowledge

I'm glad that you're working in parallel, one is busy with Java programming and the other is busy with theoretic stuff.

For Programming man, you still have a week to finish your tutorial for Java, but Hilal has to work a little bit harder.

Hilal, try to find the following terms, make as a small report and then send it to me:
  •  Data, Information and Knowledge (try to look at the following papers:
    • Russell Ackoff. From data to wisdom. Journal of Applied Systems Analysis, 16:3–9, 1989 and
    • Guus Schreiber, Mark van Assem, and Aldo Gangemi. RDF/OWL Representation ofWordNet. W3C working draft, W3C, June 2006.
  • Knowledge representation (try to look at the following papers:
      • Randall Davis, Howard Shrobe, and Peter Szolovits. What is a knowledge representation? AI Magazine, 14(1):17–33, 1993.
      • Marvin Minsky. A framework for representing knowledge. Technical report, MIT, Cambridge, MA, USA, 1974.
    1. Metadata
      • NISO Press. Understanding Metadata. National Information Standards, 2004.
    2. Ontology
      • Thomas Gruber. Toward principles for the design of ontologies used for knowledge sharing. International Journal of Human- Computer Studies, 43:907–928, November 1995.
      • Thomas Gruber. Ontology. In Ling Liu and Tamer M. Özsu, editors, Encyclopedia of Database System. Springer-Verlag, 2008.
    3. Upper ontology
      • Viviana Mascardi, Valentina Cordì, and Paolo Rosso. A comparison of upper ontologies. Technical Report DISI-TR-06-21, Dipartimento di Informatica e Scienze dell’Informazione (DISI), Università degli Studi di Genova, Via Dodecaneso 35, 16146, Genova, Italy, 2006.
      1. Cyc
      2. SUMO
      3. WordNet
