A: Tips:
A: Recognition requires certain processor speed and floating point operation support. If you have an older device (HTC G1/Magic, CPU speed less than 700Mhz), try the compressed model. It offers faster recognition speed with a negligible recognition rate decrease. Press the Menu key on the main screen, then select Settings->Recognition model->'JP comb. compressed' to install it.
A: It should work with any device running Android 1.6 or above. Recognition needs some CPU power, so it works best on a faster phone (1GHz). Major Android devices on the market are supported. As of version 2.0, it also fully supports tablet (Honeycomb and ICS):
A: No, the app can be downloaded from the Handwriting Recognizer site as well. You can also buy upgrade coupons on the site.
A: Currently no. You can, however, append multiple characters to the clipboard to achieve similar functionality. Long press the character you want to append in the list of candidates and select 'Append to clipboard' from the context menu.
Version 1.5 integrates with the Simeji Japanese input method by providing a 'mushroom' (premium feature). You can call Kanji Recognizer from within Simeji and enter characters by handwriting. The kanji you select from the list of candidates is automatically inserted in the text you are writing.
If you are using version 1.7 and later, you can input multiple characters using Simej. Characters you select are added to the input buffer, and you can return the whole string to Simeji by pressing the OK (tick) button.
A: Yes, download WWWJDIC for Android and you can use Kanji Recognizer as the handwriting recognition backend. You will get both a full-featured dictionary and high accuracy kanji recognition. For other dictionaries, copy recognized characters and paste them into your favourite app.
Version 1.5 provides search by character, reading or English meaning (premium feature). It can be used as a standalone kanji dictionary.
A: Try my Hanzi recognizer app. It has similar features and supports both traditional and simplified Chinese.
A: Hosting the resource files is cheap, but not free. Ad revenue is used to pay for hosting.
If you really hate ads, you can upgrade to the premium version for a small fee (version 1.5 and on). Ads will not be displayed and you get to access to all premium features (favorites and history, CSV export, search by reading/meaning, Simeji integration).
A: Shouldn't happen, contact me so we can sort it out (see main page for contact info). In the mean time,
delete the 'kanji-recognizer' folder from your SD card and restart the app.
If you are using version 1.4, press the Menu key, select Settings->Delete resources to delete all resources and restart the installer.
A: Use a file manager (Astro, etc) to delete it if you really don't need it. The reason it is not automatically deleted is that there is currently no reliable way to automatically delete resource folders when the app is uninstalled across all supported Android versions.
If you are using version 1.4, press the Menu key, select Settings->Delete resources to delete all resources before you uninstall the application.
A: Email me and I will consider it.
A: There is no warranty, use at your own risk. Do email me with more details and I will do my best to fix it.
