Post date: Jun 15, 2018 5:34:35 PM

October 12-13, 2018 -- Newport Middle School

This year, the Coastal Learning Symposium – Oregon Coast Aquarium’s annual teachers conference – is teaming up with the Oregon Science Teachers Association (OSTA)’s annual conference to offer our first-ever joint educational event: the Making Waves Conference!

As always, Lincoln County School District teachers can register for the Coastal Learning Symposium on Friday, October 12 for free. This year, our theme is Learning Where you Live with Place-Based Education.

Some of our scheduled workshops include:

Place-based Education in the Primary Grades: Problem-solving and Play

Science and Ecotourism: Fostering unconventional partnership for authentic project based learning

Developing Place-Based Field Study Programs in Rural Schools

Education Through Stewardship, Art and Positive Action

Because this is a joint conference, LCSD teachers can also choose to register for the OSTA conference strands for only $40 – normally the cost is between $110-$175! The OSTA strands this year are Navigating Phenomena-Based Storylines and Buoying Math and Literacy with Science and Technology Integration.

A sample of sessions scheduled for the OSTA strands:

Exploring waves, energy, and community impacts

Language Development in Earth and Physical Science

Engineering the Oregon Trail

SUPERMOON! Building a Literacy-Infused STEAM Storyline

All sessions will be listed on the OSTA website at http://oregonscience.org/OSTA18 early next week, so be sure to check back when deciding whether to add on OSTA registration!

Registration for the full conference includes:

· Access to the Exhibitors’ Hall, with representatives from Girls Who Code, Vernier Software and Technology, STEMscopes, and more

· Lunch (or you may choose to add this onto your Coastal Learning Symposium registration for $15)

· Access to 40 additional presentation sessions

Additional special events this year include:

Thursday evening happy hour and networking at Rogue Brewery

Friday evening awards banquet and “Aquarium After Hours” event at Oregon Coast Aquarium

Saturday morning “Deep Dive” workshops
