Oregon students create murals to save our streams

Davis and Butler Creek elementary schools, Springwater Trail and Barlow high schools won prizes for their murals depicting ways to improve how the community handles stormwater.

In a contest organized by the city of Gresham, the murals were painted on the pavement near the rain gardens at the Gresham Center for the Arts Plaza. Keri Handaly, community watershed steward for Gresham, invited schools to work their magic at the end of the 2016-17 school year.

"I asked them to paint murals using wildlife that lives in our area and illustrate that preventing water pollution is important for everyone," Handaly said. "Essentially, what goes in the drain, goes in our rivers and streams." Students designed and completed the murals in June and July.
