Post date: Apr 11, 2018 6:59:56 PM

The NSTA Science Scope's (middle school journal) theme for January 2019 is Oceans; manuscripts are due June 1. Now is the time to write and submit that great idea you have been thinking about. Marine Science educators have an opportunity to make this issue of Science Scope one with outstanding examples of how "to make known the world of water."

January 2019: Oceans

Submission deadline: June 1, 2018

Although the oceans make up nearly 75% of our planet, they are still a source of mystery. They control our climate, produce half of the oxygen in the atmosphere, and absorb an enormous amount of carbon each year. Whether you live next to the ocean or hundreds of miles away, the ocean plays an integral role in the air you breathe, the water you drink, and the food that it on your plate. The oceans are the perfect venue for teaching life science, physical science, and earth science.

Share how you inspire your students to learn about this valuable resource. How do you

• Develop an appreciation of the ocean's biodiversity, including fisheries?

• Use physical properties of water to teach about density, currents, and the transmission of sound?

• Incorporate knowledge of the ocean's various ecosystems such as coral reefs and the pelagic sea?

• Discuss ocean-related natural events such as tsunamis and hurricanes?

• Use the ocean to teach about acidification or water chemistry?

• Create knowledge of tectonic plate movement using seafloor features?

• Instill curiosity for exploration of the world’s oceans?
