The family reunion of 2022 began in the wonderfully restored cabin of John Wingate Truitt and Elizabeth Robinson Truitt. We got started about 10:00 on June 19th and enjoyed a tour of the grounds with an updated bell rope, cover on the well and new farm implements from the period. The additions of signs welcoming visitors from the road and other improvements have increased visibility of the cabin and we have seen more visitors on a weekly basis. Many new families came to the reunion for the first time, and kids enjoyed climbing upstairs and also getting to play an antique pump organ in the living and dining room. We had new invited guests as well such as Hudson Olds, who recently included an article on the log cabin in the East Texas Journal; Phil Johnston, who made updates to various out buildings on the property and had been a big part of the restoration project; and Kyle Penney, from East Texas Communities Foundation, who helps us manage our charitable trust to care for and maintain the property.
The reunion continued by changing from the log cabin to Concord Baptist Church, where we had lunch in the Fellowship Hall of a church built on property donated by Truitt family members in Upshur County for the church and school. The lunch was catered and enjoyed by those that attended. Following the lunch with photos from each of the descending families of John W. Truitt and Elizabeth R. Truitt, we went into the sanctuary for the reunion program. This included a nice slide show of historical photos and stories of several of our extended relatives. We also had a short survey of Bible passages related to family and legacy by Rev. Clay Potter, of Concord Baptist Church. Also, Kyle Penney, President of East Texas Communities Foundation, spoke to share methods available for providing donations for the trust and how we may look at raising the funds necessary to help continue the restoration and maintenance going forward. Looking at about $10,000 per year in expenses, we would want to have funds of about $200,000 to provide an income to maintain the structure and property going forward.
The time together with family was both fun and educational. We look forward to seeing many others join us in future years. Also, click the photo, to go to the pictures from this year's reunion.
