Assyria was the second world power of Bible history, and had a fearsome reputation for violence and cruelty. Its culture, however, was very advanced and produced beautiful works of art. An exhibition of newly discovered Assyrian artefacts caused a sensation in London society when it opened, and fuelled the expansion of archaeological expeditions into ancient lands. Those very same objects as still on display today, and many have with a direct link to the Bible.
