Silicon Nanowires

During the last half century, a dramatic downscaling of electronics has taken place, a miniaturization that the industry expects to continue for at least a decade. The roadmap for downscaling and introducing new technologies in the semiconductor industry is well laid out for the next ten years. In a special section on emerging Research Devices in the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors, one dimensional structures, such as carbon nanotubes (CNT) and semiconductors nanowires (SNW), are explicitly mentioned as realistic additions. In this work, sillicon narowires are presented. Different fabrication techniques will be explained. A view of today’s state-of-the-art of this structures fabrication will be given, focusing too on the limitations that they present today to be easily introduced in the consumer-market as a large scale solution. An overview of the different techniques developed in orther to assemble nanowires and other components will be given as well. And finally the future perspective of this technology and the conclusions will be presented.
